The mentality of thinking oneself to be great is more arrogant than arrogance itself. The mentality that arises from clinging to the aggregates of appropriation as self and mine is the arrogance of "I am." The mentality of thinking that one has attained the superior qualities to be attained, such as the four fruits, meditative absorptions, and superknowledges, even though one has not attained them, is excessive arrogance. Even thinking that one is slightly inferior to someone who possesses qualities that are extremely superior is also a slight arrogance, because one does not perceive the difference as it is, or because one thinks that even though one is inferior in a superior group, one is still outstanding among others. The mentality of thinking that one possesses qualities when one does not, but instead possesses immoral discipline, etc., is perverse arrogance. How does it connect? If one has arrogance, one does not completely understand the faults of clinging to self and mine, so one does not abandon it there, and through these non-virtuous actions, etc. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. Through what does it connect? Through the ignorance of the three realms. How does it connect? Because one does not understand that suffering and the origin of suffering are to be known and abandoned, one is particularly attached to them. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. Through what does it connect? Through the three, such as the view of the aggregates as a real self. How does it connect? The view of the aggregates as a real self holds that I am liberated, I will be liberated. Having grasped in this way, one seeks a way of escape with wrong views. The extreme view holds that even after liberation, one will be either permanent or annihilated. In this way, one manifests attachment. The wrong view holds that there is no liberation in Buddhism. Self-cultivation is the path to liberation. In this way, with wrong views, one manifests attachment to the means of escape. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. Through what does it connect? Through the three, such as holding views as supreme. How does it connect? Through them, abandoning the eightfold noble path, believing that purification can be achieved through the view of the aggregates as a real self, etc., and the discipline and asceticism that precede them, one manifests attachment to the means of escape with wrong views. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. Through what does it connect? Because one has doubt about whether the four truths are to be known, etc.

How to combine? As it is said in the scriptures, in the Uttaratantra, "Uncreated and spontaneously accomplished, not realized by others' conditions, possessing jñāna (wisdom), prema (love), and śakti (power), the Buddha possesses two benefits." As it is said, doubting whether the Buddha Jewel, possessing eight qualities, is the supreme among the two-legged beings. Without thought, without duality, without discrimination, the pure, clear, and antidotal side, that which is free from attachment by what, possessing the nature of the two truths, is Dharma. Likewise, doubting whether the Dharma Jewel, possessing eight qualities, is the supreme among those free from attachment? And "Among suchness and allness, because the vision of wisdom is pure, the assembly of the wise who do not turn back, possess unsurpassed qualities." Doubting whether the Sangha Jewel, as mentioned, is the supreme among the assemblies? Thus, doubting, one does not take refuge in the Buddha. Regarding the Dharma, one is not certain whether it is the true fruit, the path, and the manifestation of those, so one does not engage in hearing and thinking. Regarding the Sangha, one is not certain whether one has truly entered, so one does not perform services. Therefore, one cannot accomplish well. With what does one combine? With suffering. With what does one combine? With jealousy. How does one combine? Cherishing worldly perfections such as gain and respect, but not cherishing pure Dharma. With what does one combine? With suffering. With what does one combine? With miserliness. How does one combine? Lacking resources such as food and wealth, one is separated from them, not cherishing them, but cherishing many and beautiful things. With what does one combine? With suffering. What are the bonds? The three, such as desire. The three, such as pride, are included in ignorance. What does one bind with them? It is said that with the bond of desire, the three increase in order from the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and equanimity and their roots. Why is it called a bond? Because relying on those such as desire, the three of hearing, thinking, and meditation
