Because one does not guard one's mind with respect to these behaviors, and because one indulges in laxity, one is not fully pacified due to negligence. Because one does not care about non-virtuous dharmas, one is not fully pacified due to shamelessness. What are the causes and conditions for the arising of afflictions? The latent predispositions of afflictions, the causal condition of not having been completely abandoned by the path that transcends the world, and the objective condition of the dharmas that are the abode of afflictions such as desire, appearing as attractive and unattractive aspects, and the inappropriate attention of grasping at the attractive or unattractive characteristics of that object, from dwelling closely to this, afflictions arise. Regarding the object, all afflictions such as desire become the object of all afflictions. The bases from which afflictions arise are also their objects. Except for the three afflictions of ignorance and so forth, the other afflictions that operate in the desire realm do not focus on the afflictions of the higher realms such as the first dhyana. For example, desire does not focus on the higher dharmas, because rejoicing in the higher dharmas is faith that aspires to virtuous dharmas, and because there is no affliction, and because it does not cause harm, anger does not arise. Because there is no self-grasping towards the formations of other realms, it is also not pride. Ignorance, views, and doubt, although they also have objects in the higher realms, they do not manifestly focus on them as they do on their own realm, because they enter through conceptual imputation. Therefore, one should understand that their focus is established separately. Among them, ignorance that focuses on the higher realms is associated with views. View refers to views of the aggregates, except for the view of the perishable collection, because one does not see manifest clinging to the formations of other realms as "I." What are the other views like? Holding Brahma as the creator, and denying the results of unwavering actions, such as wrong views, and holding that view itself as supreme, such as view of holding views as supreme, and viewing them as liberating, such as the view of holding ethics and asceticism as supreme. Extreme views are also destructi

Therefore, one does not focus on following (the higher ground). What kind of doubt is it? It is hesitating about worldly affairs. The afflictions of the higher grounds do not focus on the dharmas of the lower grounds, because they are free from attachment to those (lower ground dharmas). Those that focus on cessation and the path do not focus on those (cessation and path), because those are to be known individually by the wisdom that transcends the world and the wisdom gained from it. So, what do those focus on? Those focus on what is completely conceptualized by them, focusing on the image of cessation and the path that is imputed by oneself. In that way, do those who focus on the higher ground also not become focused on that (higher ground)? The higher ground is familiar with samsara, so there is only what is in accordance with one's own imputation, but those that are uncontaminated, because they have never been familiar with samsara, are not the same because they do not agree with one's own imputation at all. How is it that focusing on an object that has no basis as it is clung to is the view of the perishable aggregate and pride, along with their associated (afflictions), because those are focused on the self, so there is no object of clinging. The other afflictions besides that are all based on having an object of clinging, so they have a basis. What is associated is that attachment is not associated with anger, because it is impossible for two extremely contradictory things to arise at the same time. It is also not associated with doubt, because if one becomes doubtful, the mind has no abiding, and one will not be attached. The remaining pride, etc., are considered to be associated because there is no incompatibility in the objects. Anger is also not associated with the three of attachment, pride, and view, because one who is displeased with hatred will not feel complacent, nor will one contemplate it from the perspective of view. Pride is also not associated with anger and doubt, because one who is hesitant about something will not feel complacent. Ignorance is associated with all other afflictions, because if one is not ignorant, no one will become an affliction. Some ignorance is also not mixed with other afflictions such as attachment. What is that? With the true
