Since those actions do not produce suffering, it is specifically pointed out that actions arise from afflictions. To avoid contradicting the scriptures, if that is the case, the Blessed One said, "What is the noble truth of the origin of suffering? It is craving, which leads to rebirth, accompanied by joy and attachment, and is keen on this, such as craving for desire, craving for existence, and craving for non-existence." Since craving itself is taught as the truth of the origin, what is the teaching? That is to say that craving is the main factor of the origin, but the origin is not limited to craving alone. What is the meaning of this sutra? In general, children have four kinds of craving that follow the four inverted views, namely: permanence, pleasure, purity, and self. These four cravings are also taught by this sutra itself, because depending on the first craving, rebirth manifests. Depending on the second and third cravings, being accompanied by joy and attachment, and being keen on this manifests. Depending on the last craving, only attachment to the body manifests. Therefore, the so-called craving refers to the craving for self. Furthermore, the so-called leading to rebirth refers to the craving for permanence. Being accompanied by joy and attachment, and being keen on this refers to the craving for pleasure and purity. So, what is craving? It is attachment to and union with the present body. What is leading to rebirth? It is the special desire for the future time. What is being accompanied by joy and attachment? It is the obvious inclination towards the five sense qualities such as form and sound, and the joy and attachment to what is obtained. What is being keen on this? It is the obvious desire for other sense qualities such as form and sound besides that. Therefore, craving for permanence and leading to rebirth are the aspect of cause. Craving for pleasure and being accompanied by joy and attachment are the aspect of origin. Craving for purity and being keen on this are the aspect of intense arising. Craving for self is the aspect of condition.
