are the outflows of ignorance. Why are they called outflows? Because the afflictions of desire are by nature distracting, causing the mind to scatter outwards and looking outwards, causing outflows towards the qualities of desire, therefore they are the outflows of desire. The afflictions of the higher realms are such that even when looking inwards, while abiding in meditative concentration, they cause outflows through craving for the feelings of absorption, and so are the outflows of existence. Both of these outflows arise from the power of ignorance, and because they are the place of these outflows, they are established as the outflows of ignorance. The nature of impoverishment is the three, such as desire and attachment. Why is it called impoverishment? Because relying on them, one desires the resources of existence, and due to the impoverishment of desire, it harms the body and mind, therefore it is impoverishment. The nature of complete burning is desire and attachment, etc. Why is it complete burning? Because relying on them, one improperly attends to objects that are pleasing and displeasing, grasping at characteristics and signs, which causes the body and mind to be completely burned, therefore they are called complete burning. For example, grasping at "this is a man, this is a woman," and grasping at "blue lotus, white lotus," etc., is grasping at characteristics. Grasping at the hands and breasts of men and women, etc., as pleasing, etc., is grasping at signs. The nature of disturbance is desire and attachment, etc. Why are they called disturbances? Because relying on them, one allows oneself to develop fondness and special attachment to forms, etc., and if they change, then they cause beings to be afflicted with sorrow, etc., therefore they are disturbances. The nature of strife is desire and attachment, etc. Why is it called strife? Because relying on them, cutting off with annihilation, etc., arises, therefore it is called strife. The nature of pestilence is the three, such as desire and attachment. Why is it called pestilence? Because relying on them, one is attached to non-dharma and non-virtue, and to seeking resources through illegitimate theft and wrong livelihood, etc., and to showing the harm of wrong dharma as the true dharma, thereby causing great burning to the body and mind.

Because it thoroughly torments, it is called an epidemic. The nature of forest combination is the three, such as desire. Why is it called forest combination? Because relying on them, one becomes attached to the root of arising—the formations—thereby causing the tree of the bodies of the five types of beings to manifest and accomplish in various forms, therefore it is called forest combination. The nature of obstacles is three, namely desire and so on. Why are they called obstacles? Because relying on them, the body and enjoyment decline, and through views of doubt and so on, the mind is not matured in the realm of knowledge, and constantly spreading noisy talk and so on in the sangha, like a ghost tree dwelling, and after starting on the side of virtue, one thinks that a little is enough, therefore not combining with them, so they are called obstacles. There are two types of wrong entry. The respective wrong entries are: the objects to be abandoned by cultivating antidotes to desire are wrong entries into objects such as form and sound; the objects to be abandoned by the path of seeing are wrong entries into views such as the view of the aggregates of destruction, because they only fixate on suffering. Whatever attachment there is to sentient beings, those are wrong entries into objects because they enter into the colors and sounds of sentient beings in an attractive manner. Similarly, anger is also a wrong entry into objects and views, because it enters into the form of completely tormenting unpleasant objects and incompatible views. Anger towards sentient beings should be understood from the perspective of objects. Pride is a wrong entry into sentient beings because it holds oneself to be greater than the small, and so on; it is a wrong entry into views because it holds one's own view to be the most superior and is proud in one's heart. The view of the aggregates of destruction, the extreme view, and wrong views are wrongly understood in the manner of superimposing and honoring on the aggregates of knowledge. If the view of the aggregates of destruction is not a wrong understanding of sentient beings because it clings to "I"? No, because it clings to "I" on the aggregates, so it is a wrong entry into the aggregates, not a wrong entry into sentient beings, because the object of clinging here is not sentient beings. The object of clinging of pride is sentient beings, as well as great views and superior
