It is greed. Or in order, greed is small, medium, large, very large, and extremely large. Or the former is explained by the latter. For the five views, due to greed and other reasons, the renunciants, both internal and external, argue with each other, and the root of the argument is the latter three acquisitions. To have desire and attachment to the sixty-two views is view-attachment. To have desire and attachment to the asceticism and severe austerities that follow each view is adherence to precepts and vows. The term "mostly" means that most outsiders rely on laborious asceticism, but some do not rely on such asceticism. The place where the sixty-two views and precepts and vows arise, to have desire and attachment to the view of the perishable assembly, is the acquisition of the assertion of self. With regard to view-attachment and adherence to precepts and vows, non-Buddhists argue with each other because their views differ. The acquisition of the assertion of self does not cause argument, because everyone agrees with the view that there is a self. This acquisition causes arguments between non-Buddhists and Buddhists, because they disagree about the views of having a self and not having a self. The summary of the meaning is: Thus, and so on. The nature of the bond is covetousness, the body's knot, and so on, the four. Why is it called a knot? Because they are not knots of the physical body, but knots that cut off the mind's nature of equanimity, between the body of mind. How do the four cut off the body of mind? Relying on greed, attachment to small and bad things such as food and clothing does not arise well at first, because the mind is distracted from not obtaining samadhi. Relying on harmful thoughts, one does not act according to the Dharma with regard to disputes and downfalls that occur, and one does not practice well. Therefore, for obtaining samadhi, the mind becomes completely distracted. Relying on the adherence to the supreme precepts and vows, for food

Through ascetic practices such as fasting and relying on the five fires, the body suffers, and the mind becomes distracted. Because only when one attains ease or abides in a state of equanimity can one calm the mind; otherwise, it is not possible. Holding one's own view as supreme, believing that only this is true and all else is meaningless. By clinging to notions of permanence, pleasure, self, and so on, and by conceptually engaging with objects of knowledge in an improper way, the mind that has attained equanimity becomes distracted from knowing things as they truly are. The obscurations are five in number, namely, desire, and so on. Why are they called obscurations? Because they obstruct engagement in virtuous activities and cause one not to contemplate virtuous things; therefore, they are called obscurations. Among them, desire obstructs the joy that arises at the time of renunciation because the one with desire wants to engage closely with desirable objects and therefore does not find joy in renunciation. Ill will obstructs encouragement; when those who practice pure conduct encourage the practice of the precepts, ill will causes one not to learn properly. Dullness and sleepiness both cause the mind to shrink inward when meditating on the causes of calm abiding. Excitement and regret occur when meditating on the causes of higher insight because at that time they cause the mind to be distracted. Doubt occurs at the time of equanimity because one cannot abide in equanimity when one is uncertain. As it is said: "Desire and other obscurations are discordant; food and activities, two and one are harmful; doubt is the fifth." One should understand it as such. Defilements are desire and so on. Why are they called defilements? Because having become accustomed to them in previous lives, one will now engage more strongly in the similar results of desire and so on. For this reason, the mind becomes unserviceable, unable to be used for virtuous activities, and difficult to separate from its antidotes; therefore, they are called defilements. The nature of afflictions is desire and so on. Why are they called afflictions? Because relying on them, one

If one behaves improperly, especially violating the precepts, then knowledgeable friends will say that this virtuous person is committing such evil violations of the precepts, and their bodily and verbal actions are in accordance with this. Their behavior is indecent, their precepts are stained with defilements, and they are extremely impure, to the point that they cause others to lose trust. Therefore, they are the thorns of the village. Thus, these are the defilements. The essence of sin is the three poisons of desire, etc. Why are they called sins? Because by relying on them, one will suffer the pain of birth and death in samsara for a long time, therefore they are called sins. The essence of thorns is the three poisons of desire, etc. Why are they called thorns? Because by relying on them, one will be harmed by craving for existence and the tools of existence, and by doubting the Three Jewels and the truth, therefore they are called thorns. The essence of possessions is also desire, etc. Why are they called possessions? Because by relying on them, one will cling to many tools, considering them necessary, and associating them with fear, etc., therefore they are possessions. The essence of wrong conduct is also desire, etc. Why is it called wrong conduct? Because by relying on them, one will commit wrong actions with the three doors of body, etc., therefore they are called wrong conduct. Furthermore, these three poisons are also considered the root of wrong conduct, because beings commit wrong actions through them. Therefore, due to the pursuit of a small amount of evil material benefits, those who seek pleasure will commit wrong actions due to attachment. Due to complete attachment to things that cause harm, those who cannot tolerate the faults of others will commit wrong actions due to hatred. Those who believe that liberation can be attained through sacrificing lives, and those who have strong attachment to other wrong religions, will commit wrong actions due to ignorance. The essence of outflows is: the afflictions of desire other than ignorance are the outflows of desire, and the higher afflictions are the outflows of existence. The ignorance of the three realms is
