Having accurately ascertained through hearing and thinking that the basis is empty of what is to be negated, and having meditated single-pointedly, it is seen in the manner of individual awareness. Therefore, regarding this basis, after negating what is to be negated, one should know that whatever the essence of the basis itself is, it exists here, just as it is in reality. It is empty of whatever is to be negated, but it is not empty of the nature of the basis. This is the correct way to engage with emptiness, because it relies on the Middle Way without deviating into the two extremes of permanence or annihilation. A detailed explanation of these is as follows: What is it that is absent in the basis? In the basis, such as the aggregates, the four extremes of permanence, etc., and the self that is the enjoyer, and the self that is to be controlled by it, are absent from the very beginning. The four extremes of permanence, etc., are explained by the subsequent ones. Therefore, these aggregates, etc., are not fallen into the extreme of permanence because they are empty of self, etc. If there is something remaining in that basis, what is it? Because there is no self, etc., it is precisely the aggregates, etc., that are distinguished as mere phenomena. However, it is not completely non-existent, because it is the basis for confusion into self and what belongs to self, etc. For no confusion is seen in something without a basis. Therefore, it is also not fallen into the extreme of annihilation. In this way, the imputed self, etc., that are to be negated do not exist, but the nature of the basis, distinguished by selflessness, i.e., mere phenomena, does exist, so emptiness should be understood. If this is the correct way to engage with emptiness, what is the reason for it? To illustrate this, a quote from scripture is given: Considering that the self, etc., that are to be negated do not exist, and that the basis, the aggregates, etc., which is empty of them, exists as mere phenomena, the Blessed One said, "There is," etc. Therefore, by knowing that the aggregates, which are empty of self, exist as mere phenomena in reality, one does not slander; and by knowing that the phenomena of the conceptual constructs of permanence, etc., do not exist from the very beginning, one does not add on. Therefore, this is knowing as it is in reality. These are the emptiness of the selflessness of the person. The second is,
