That has already been explained. When the three calamities of fire, etc., destroy the world, in order, the three dhyana heavens, such as the second dhyana, will remain. The three calamities of famine, etc., will bring the abiding intermediate kalpas to an end. One of the decreasing kalpas is from the immeasurable lifespan decreasing until it reaches a lifespan of ten years, which is the first intermediate kalpa of the abiding kalpa. The increasing is up to eighty thousand years, and the decreasing is down to a lifespan of ten years. Eighteen such cycles are the kalpas that occur during the abiding kalpa. One of the increasing kalpas is the increase from a lifespan of ten years to eighty thousand years, which is the last of the intermediate kalpas of the abiding kalpa. The phrase "in the manner of counting kalpas" is incidental, and that has already been explained. Now, do these beings not die before the great kalpa, which is said to be their lifespan, is exhausted? No, when life, merit, and karma are exhausted, even if their respective lifespans are not exhausted, they will die and transfer from that place. Among them, the exhaustion of life is because the life extended by one's previous karma is completely exhausted, and death occurs when the time of death arrives. The exhaustion of merit is that even if life or extension is not exhausted, due to some sudden factor, the power of the exhaustion of the karma of merit that sustains life causes death even when the time of death has not arrived. For example, those beings born in the form and formless realms sustain themselves by tasting the flavor of the innate samadhi of their own continuum, but their karma of merit will be exhausted, and therefore they will die even before the time has come. The exhaustion of karma is because they have already been born in that place, or have exhausted the karma to be experienced in other instances, or because there is no karma, and this should be understood as not being born in that place for the time being. Second, the characteristic of suffering is the three sufferings, such as the suffering of suffering itself, and the eight kinds of suffering, such as the suffering of fear, which have already been explained in detail. If the forms of suffering are determined to be three or eight, then why does the sutra say, "Whatever is impermanent is suffering"? Because impermanence itself arises from what has never arisen before.

Because of aging, the rain of birth also descends, leading to destruction, the rain of death also descends. Relying on the first impermanence, one can fully understand the suffering of suffering, because the feeling of suffering, along with its place, is painful from the very beginning of its arising. Relying on the second impermanence, one can thoroughly understand the suffering of change, because the feeling of happiness, along with its place, becomes suffering when it is destroyed. Relying on the impermanence that belongs to both, one can thoroughly understand the suffering of conditioning, because the nature of the suffering of conditioning, the five aggregates of grasping, is painful both at the beginning of arising and at the end of destruction. Therefore, impermanence itself clearly explains the three kinds of suffering, so it is said that whatever is impermanent is suffering. Impermanence itself clearly explains the three kinds of suffering, and considering this, the Blessed One himself said, 'I consider the conditioned phenomena of the side of equanimity to be impermanent, and the conditioned phenomena of the side of happiness to produce suffering when they change, so whatever contaminated experience is felt, this is called suffering here.' 'Whatever is felt' refers to the two feelings of happiness and equanimity, as for the feeling of suffering, because it is known as suffering in the world, there is no need to examine the idea of considering it as suffering. Another idea about saying that impermanence is suffering is that the birth of the characteristics of the senses being manifestly accomplished, and the destruction of the senses becoming extinct, are related to the inner conditioning, and for these inner conditioning, birth is suffering, etc., manifesting eight kinds of suffering, therefore, only considering these, it is said that impermanence is suffering, but impermanence is not the self-nature of suffering, because then it would always become suffering. The third is the characteristic of emptiness. There are two kinds of emptiness: the emptiness of the self of the person and the emptiness of the self of phenomena. The first is, briefly stated, on the basis of what is to be refuted, there is no what is to be refuted.
