As it is said. Equanimity is the nature of being completely free from afflictions, because it is free from greed and displeasure, and is the nature of a temporary state that is not afflicted. This is like a minister wishing the four limbs of the army to be at ease. As it is said: With equanimity at all times, this abides as desired. Meditation is what is said in the sutras, such as mindfulness, the limb of perfect enlightenment. These words sequentially show that the limbs of enlightenment are cultivated with the four truths as their objects. Thus, taking suffering as suffering itself as the object, that is, seeking solitude, the limbs of enlightenment that take suffering as their object are called abiding in solitude. Taking the origin as what should be abandoned as the object, that is, seeking to be free from it, those that take the origin as the object are called abiding in detachment. Those that take cessation as what should be realized as the object, that is, wanting to realize it, those that take it as the object are called abiding in cessation. The path that leads to the cessation of suffering is called complete abandonment because it completely eliminates suffering. Taking it as the object in this way, that is, seeking to cultivate it, it is called completely transformed by complete abandonment. The result is the abandonment of the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, because the limbs of enlightenment are the nature of the path of seeing. The object of the limb of the path is the truth of the four truths as it is seen after the limb of enlightenment of the path of seeing, those are the nature of the supramundane path of cultivation. Establishing names on the nature is the eight limbs, such as right view. The way of becoming a limb is that right view is the limb of complete determination, because it firmly grasps the reality of how it is experienced in equanimity. Discrimination is the limb that makes others understand, because it separately establishes how it is understood, and completely arises from speech. With the three, such as right speech, the yogi himself makes the view and so on completely pure, making others believe. Among them, with right speech, asking in accordance with understanding.

I establish the words of the Nagarjuna's teachings, so that the yogi fully understands the pure view. By the ultimate of correct action, fully engaging in samsara and nirvana, one fully understands the pure discipline. By correct livelihood, seeking robes and other things as permitted, one believes in the purity of livelihood. Effort is a limb for purifying the obscurations of afflictions, because it abandons all remaining habits. Mindfulness is a limb for purifying the obscurations of near afflictions, because it does not forget the characteristics with correct shamatha and vipassana, thereby preventing near afflictions such as sinking and excitement from having a chance. Samadhi is a limb for purifying the obscurations of special qualities, because it can manifest and accomplish qualities such as abhijna. These are also as stated in the Madhyantavibhaga: 'Complete cutting off and understanding, and the other three make one believe. As antidotes to opposing factors, these are the eight limbs of the path.' So on and so forth. Companions and meditation are just understanding. The result is completely cutting off the correct view, and so on, which has already been said. The meaning of the four paths and the four abodes of dharma should be understood as previously explained. Among the three paths for accomplishing all qualities, the first is shamatha, which pacifies the cause of distraction. This also has nine ways of abiding the mind. Among them, placing the mind within is to draw the mind back from external objects, not to be distracted outwards, and to bind it closely within from the very beginning. Continuously abiding is to continuously fix the coarse, wavering mind that was initially bound in that way. Binding and abiding is to draw it back and abide again if it becomes distracted outwards due to forgetfulness. Near abiding is to make mindfulness abide near from the very beginning in order to prevent the mind from scattering outwards. Subduing is to regard the causes of distraction, such as forms, as faults, and not to allow the mind to scatter towards them from the very beginning. Tranquilizing is to regard the near afflictions and conceptual thoughts that disturb the mind as faults.
