It is merely to make it suitable as a vessel for realization, and it is not actually entering into the realization of the true reality. Therefore, it is not aimed at the truths. The faculties and powers are actually entering in order to realize the truths. Therefore, it is established that the object is the four noble truths. Therefore, the object of the faculties is the four noble truths, because it is included in the practice of realizing the truths, and it is the cause of its transformation. The nature and companions are easy to understand. Meditation is: with the faculty of faith, in the manner of believing in the truths as knowable and abandonable, etc.; with diligence, in the manner of delighting in order to realize the reality of the truths; with mindfulness, in the manner of not forgetting the object and aspects of the truths; with samadhi, in the manner of focusing the mind on these truths; and with wisdom, in the manner of meditating by thoroughly distinguishing impermanence, etc. Therefore, these five are called faculties because they have power over the realization of the truths. Even in the state of mindfulness and so on, there are faith and so on. However, although they are generally faculties that have power over the path of purification, they are not faculties that have power over the realization of the truths. Therefore, as long as one has not entered into the stage that is in accordance with the decisive factor, the five, such as faith, do not have the name of the faculties of the limbs of enlightenment. The result is the quick arising of the path of seeing, and these are established in the stages of warmth and peak, so these are practiced immediately, and it is proven by practicing forbearance and the supreme mundane dharma later. The objects of the powers, etc., are the same as the faculties, because these faculties themselves, in the stages of forbearance and the supreme mundane dharma, the unfavorable aspects such as disbelief are necessarily weakened, because they cannot be overcome, so they are established as powers. As it is also said in the "Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes": "The faculties and powers, each have two aspects in accordance with the decisive factor." That is how it is said. The object of the limbs of enlightenment is

The suchness of the four noble truths is like this. In terms of essence, there are two types; what is indicated by name is mindfulness and so on. The way they become limbs is as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "The limb of nature, the limb of place, the third is the limb of renunciation, the fourth is the limb of benefit, and the limb without the three kinds of afflictions." As it is said, mindfulness is a limb of the place of the Bodhi of the path of seeing, because abiding in mindfulness prevents the decline of virtuous dharmas through the gate of mental recollection. This is like a precious wheel that makes one arrive at a place not yet reached and makes one realize what has not been realized. As it is said in the Ornament: "Mindfulness is always employed in order to conquer what has not been conquered." Wisdom is a limb of nature, because the Bodhi of the path of seeing is the nature of wisdom. It destroys the conceptualizations of grasping onto persons and phenomena, just as an elephant destroys external attacks. As it is said: "This discriminating thought destroys all characteristics." Diligence is a limb of renunciation, because it causes what should be traveled to be traveled as far as it goes. It quickly accomplishes direct realization, just as a fine horse quickly reaches the end of the earth to the ocean. As it is said: "This diligence, without exception, engages in order to quickly realize." Joy is a limb of benefit, because it satisfies the mind stream. This is like a jewel that makes a king happy with the distinction of light. As it is said: "For the increase of the light of the Dharma, joy always increases." Pliancy is what prevents one from being defiled by afflictions, because it destroys the cause of afflictions—negative karma. This is like a queen who makes a king experience happiness. As it is said: "In order to be liberated from all obscurations, one obtains the bliss of pliancy." Samadhi is a limb that prevents one from being defiled by afflictions, because abiding in it transforms the place. It accomplishes all desired meanings, like a householder. As it is said: "The meaning contemplated in samadhi, wealth arises nearby.
