The explanation about companions is divided into two parts. The explanation of the basis is that practicing with reverence, that is, practicing with strong intention, thereby attaining single-pointedness of mind. Continuous practice is never abandoning diligence. Mental Samadhi is that, because of having practiced Samadhi in previous lives, it nourishes the seed of the mind, and naturally attains single-pointedness of mind. The Samadhi of discernment is that, relying on the wisdom of discriminating Dharma that arises from the sound taught by other virtuous friends, thereby attaining single-pointedness of mind. Second, explaining the fruit of perfect abiding, that is, "also" etc. Generating intention etc., because it has been explained before, it is easy to understand. Meditation is divided into meditation of abandoning actions and meditation of abandoning two faults. The first, as the Madhyāntavibhāga says: "Laziness and instructions, forgetfulness and sinking and excitement, non-application and application, these five are considered faults." Therefore, there are five unfavorable factors. First, the fault of not meditating is laziness, its antidote is to meditate on the four from intention to extreme pliancy, of which the real antidote is effort, its basis is intention, its cause is faith, and the fruit of effort is extreme pliancy. When starting to practice, forgetting the instructions is a fault, its antidote is mindfulness. When entering the main practice, sinking and excitement are faults, their antidote is vigilance that observes them. When sinking and excitement occur, not applying the antidote itself is a fault, its antidote is the mental activity of generating attention to the antidote to sinking and excitement. When the inequality of sinking and excitement disappears and naturally enters, generating mental activity is a fault, its antidote is equanimity. These eight can be summarized into four, namely, effort is intention, diligence, and faith. Benefit is extreme pliancy, because it benefits body and mind. Approaching is mindfulness and vigilance, because not forgetting the object, it can enter single-pointedness of mind, and if one is negligent about it, it can be completely cut off.

reason. The antidote is attention and equanimity, which manifest by extremely holding and extremely relaxing the mind. Therefore, completely abandoning sinking and excitement, and having no near afflictions, is for the sake of following the characteristics of calm abiding and so forth. As it is said, in the Madhyāntavibhāga, "Not forgetting the object, understanding sinking and excitement, eliminating them makes them manifest, abiding peacefully." So it is said. The second is gathering, which is languishing through the door of sleep and drowsiness. Its basis is being separated from higher seeing, because it turns into sinking through the door of laziness. Having abandoned it, contemplating in accordance with not languishing, is seeing knowable things with the wisdom of individual self-awareness. Distraction is scattering on objects by following the characteristics of the beautiful, its basis is being separated from the perception of the unpleasant, because excitement does not truly hold on to it. Having abandoned it, being in accordance with not being distracted is individually realizing impurity in substances such as hair. What is in accordance with the state of both of them is the perception of appearance. Having made them the masters, by "My intention should not become too languid, and not be too grasped," etc., abandoning the two bases, by "Not gathered inward, and not scattered outward," etc., abandoning gathering and scattering, by "The perception of the latter and the former," etc., being in accordance with not languishing, by "One should make the perception of above and below," etc., being in accordance with not being distracted, thus, the mind that is separated is without entanglement, one should contemplate the mind endowed with appearance. By "My mind should not become of the nature of darkness," etc., it is taught to contemplate in accordance with the state of both of them. The result is that the person who desires to realize the Dharma, the person who focuses his mind and desires on this and that, such as the eye and clairvoyance, becomes the one who has the fortune to realize the Dharma of his own position to which he has focused his mind, such as walking in the sky, as he desires. Why are the three, such as mindfulness, not established as having the truths as their objects? Those are gathered by the path of accumulation, therefore, they can make the mind stream manifest the truths.
