After that, through hearing and transcending thought, by meditating in a single-pointed manner, cultivating calm abiding and insight that focus on coarse and subtle characteristics, this arises from meditation. What arises from extreme solitude is: through habituation, first, the mental engagement that possesses the path of abandonment, thereby abandoning the three great aspects of afflictions of the lower realms such as the desire realm, and in order to be separated from the unfortunate states of that aspect. Gathering joy is: that yogi then becomes joyful in abandonment, and regards abandonment as beneficial, having touched the small joy and happiness that is separated from the three great afflictions, and constantly engaging the mind with things that have become joyful, in order to be separated from drowsiness and sleep, this is the mental engagement of joy. The mental engagement of examination is: that one who has entered well in this way, in order to show that it is connected to the side of virtue, in order to understand that the entanglements of afflictions of the lower realms such as the desire realm do not arise, therefore, whether it is abandoned or not, engaging the mind with the characteristics of suffering that are in accordance with its arising, and individually discerning it. The mental engagement of the edge of union is: having examined in this way, if he knows that a little has not been abandoned, in order to be separated from all afflictions, engaging the mind with the antidote to abandoning the three small aspects of afflictions. The mental engagement of the fruit of the edge of union is: after that, obtaining the actual mind of the first dhyana and so on. Among these, the complete understanding of characteristics is: having completely understood what is to be abandoned and what is to be attained, placing the mind on what is to be abandoned and what is to be attained. What arises from aspiration is: after that, beginning to truly unite. What arises from extreme solitude is: abandoning the three great pervasive afflictions. Gathering joy is: abandoning the three medium afflictions. Examination is: placing the mind without the pride of apparent attainment. The edge of union is: completely abandoning the three small aspects of afflictions. The fruit of the edge of union is: through well-cultivated mental engagement, experiencing the fruits of those cultivations. The cause of equipoise is equal entering.

The measure of it is through the distinctions of the object and aspect being unclear, clear, and extremely clear, or through the distinctions of cultivating without possessing both reverence and constant practice, possessing either one, and possessing both, there are three types of cultivation: small, medium, and large. The measure of the arising of the result is that by cultivating the three types of the first dhyana, such as the small, the results of those, in order, manifestly accomplish the three birthplaces of the first dhyana, such as the Brahma host. Similarly, for the remaining dhyanas as well, one should understand that by cultivating the three types, such as the small, at the time of entering into samadhi, the result, the three birthplaces of dhyana, are accomplished. The formless realms are because there is no other place of immeasurable mansions. Thus, although there is no establishment of different distinctions of birth, nevertheless, there, by cultivating as small, one is born as inferior and lower; by medium, one is born as inferior and higher, or as good and lower; by cultivating as large, one is born as high and good. Among these, high and low refer to long and short lifespans, and so forth. Inferior and good refer to much affliction and the reverse of that. Naming is through the gateway of accomplishing the distinctions of the power of samadhi encompassed by the first dhyana and so forth. For the countless names that are established, when the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have obtained mastery enter into samadhi, even the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not know those names, so what need is there to mention knowing the number or being able to enter into samadhi? The reason for this is the difference of the presence or absence of the perfection of dhyana. Utterly pure refers to the first dhyana and so forth that have become medium from one's own small, and then large from that, the ultimate peak is called utterly pure, because for the sake of manifestly accomplishing excellent qualities such as manifest cognition, it leads to the supreme state of being serviceable as desired. Secondly, the path beyond the world is that in the stage of the path of cultivation, realizing the suchness of the four truths, such as suffering, the four that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of dharma, and the four that are in accordance with the aspect of the knowledge of subsequent realization, which is the wisdom truly realizing that itself. Altogether, the eight aspects are in accordance with the aspect of vipashyana. Shamatha and vipashyana.

The earth element is the same as those, from the proximity attainment of the first dhyana, which possesses the same qualities, to the sphere of nothingness. In short, the six dhyana practitioners, including the first three formless dhyanas, can generate the nature of being without outflows, because they possess tranquility and the movement of the mind is manifestly clear. When the first dhyana arises as without outflows, it does not possess investigation and analysis as limbs, because the path beyond the world is of a non-conceptual nature. The peak of existence is a place where the movement of consciousness is not entirely clear, and because it is not the place where the path beyond the world is most clear, it is worldly. Therefore, because it has inferior consciousness, it does not take the object as a sign, and is therefore called signless. If you ask, how do you know that the peak of existence itself does not have the noble path? The answer is because it is said in the sutras that to the extent that one enters into meditative absorption with clear consciousness, to that extent one realizes the all-knowing path beyond the world. Among the nine successive abidings, the peak of existence is also shown to be worldly, and the other seven are beyond the world. If you ask, how is cessation? The answer is that it is beyond the world, because it is attained after the path beyond the world. That cessation is first manifested among people, where coarse consciousness and feelings arise, because they seek cessation by blocking them. That which was previously generated is manifested among people or in the form realm in the next life. It is not in the formless realm, for the reason that it is peaceful, and so on. If you ask, how can one be free from attachment to form, obtain the mind of the peak of existence, and then be born in the form realm and manifest cessation? The answer is that merely being free from attachment to form does not necessarily mean that one can enter into meditative absorption in the formless realms. Therefore, there are four possibilities: that is, there are those who are free from attachment to form but cannot enter into meditative absorption in the formless realms, because they are free from attachment to form by relying on the non-returner, such as arhats. There are those who are not free from desire for form but can enter into meditative absorption in the formless realms, namely the fourth dhyana.
