O! Regarding classification, there are four types, including limb classification. The first, limb classification, is that the first dhyana possesses five limbs, namely: Thus, desire is coarse, the first dhyana is peaceful. The initial application of thought (vitarka), characterized by a pervasive seeking, and subsequently, sustained application of thought (vicara), characterized by meticulously distinguishing differences through the quantity of afflictions, the length of life, and so on, are the limbs of antidotes. This is because they abandon the desire for desire, malice, harm, displeasure, and other opposing factors of the first dhyana. The joy and happiness born from the absence of sinful, non-virtuous dharmas are the limbs of benefit, as they benefit the body and mind of the meditators. One-pointedness of mind is the limb of the basis, as the limbs of antidotes and benefits, such as vitarka and vicara, arise in dependence upon it. Similarly, in the second dhyana, the inner purity that is the nature of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity is the limb of antidote, as it abandons the opposing factors of the second dhyana, such as vitarka and vicara. The joy and happiness born from samadhi are the limbs of benefit. In the third dhyana, mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity are the limbs of antidote, as they abandon the opposing factors of the third dhyana, such as joy. Happiness without joy is the limb of benefit. In the fourth dhyana, mindfulness and completely purified equanimity are the limbs of antidote, as they abandon the opposing factors of the fourth dhyana, such as happiness. Feeling equanimity is the limb of benefit. Why is it that although the first dhyana possesses mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, they are not established as limbs of antidote? Because although the first dhyana has mindfulness and so on, it is manifestly accomplished by vitarka and vicara, and therefore does not function with its own nature, it is not spoken of as a limb of antidote. In the second dhyana, it functions with its own nature, but because it is overwhelmed by joy, it is not spoken of by its own name, but is spoken of by the name "utmost purity."

In the third dhyana, mindfulness and so forth are mentioned by their own names because of being freed from the all-around entanglement of joy. In the fourth dhyana, mindfulness and equanimity are indicated by the term 'completely pure' because of being free from all the faults of dhyana. If asked, what is the difference between the first and second dhyanas? The answer is that there is a difference between samadhi not being fully perfected and being perfected, due to the difference between not being separated from and being separated from attachment to investigation and analysis. If asked, what is the difference between the second and third dhyanas? The answer is that there is a difference between benefit not being fully perfected and being perfected, due to the difference between not being separated from and being separated from attachment to joy. If asked, what is the difference between the third and fourth dhyanas? The answer is that there is a difference between purity not being fully perfected and being perfected, due to the difference between not being liberated from and being liberated from all the faults of dhyana. If asked, why is the first dhyana called 'having joy and bliss born of solitude'? The answer is that its joy and bliss are born only from being separated from attachment to desire and harmfulness, etc., which are sinful and unwholesome. If asked, why is the second dhyana called 'having joy and bliss born of samadhi'? The answer is that its joy and bliss are born from the complete perfection of samadhi, having been separated from attachment to investigation and analysis. If asked, what is the nature of the joy and bliss of the first two [dhyanas]? The answer is that, according to the Vaibhashikas, joy is the pacification of the feeling of the retinue of mind-consciousness, and bliss is sheer pliancy. So they say. Some Sutrantikas say that joy is as before, and bliss is the pacification of the feeling of the retinue of sense-consciousness, because the sutra says that bliss is experienced by the body. Sheer pliancy should not be bliss, because the fourth dhyana is the most excellent sheer pliancy, but bliss is not mentioned as a limb. So they say. Here, that very pacification of the feeling of the retinue of mind-consciousness is called joy because it benefits the retinue of mind-consciousness, and because it is in harmony with samadhi, it turns inward and is called bliss because it benefits the body with its senses, but these two are not different in substance. In the third dhyana, the pacification of the feeling of the retinue of mind-consciousness
