It is like this. The second is solely derived from combination. Moreover, the first is solely dependent on its own ground, while the second is solely dependent on the lower ground. In order to attain the actual state of the second, there are two types of mind: the preparatory stage, which involves fully training in its objects, and the actual mind, which is the culmination of that. The first is innate, so there is no distinction between the preparatory stage and the actual state. The actual state also has four dhyanas (meditative absorptions). Thus, with the limb of counteracting coarse thought and subtle discernment, having completely separated from desire from the desire realm, possessing a one-pointed mind with its concomitants, and having joy and bliss born from solitude as limbs of benefit, is the first dhyana. In this, again, with the limb of counteracting conduct, even from coarse thought being separated from desire, possessing a one-pointed mind with its concomitants, is called the distinguished actual state, while the former is called merely the actual state. The second dhyana is with the limb of inner clarity counteracting, having completely separated from coarse thought and subtle discernment, possessing a one-pointed mind with its concomitants, and having joy and bliss born from samadhi as limbs of benefit. The third dhyana is with the limb of mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity counteracting, having completely separated from joy, possessing a one-pointed mind with its concomitants, and having bliss devoid of joy as limbs of benefit. The fourth dhyana is with the limb of completely purified mindfulness and equanimity counteracting, having completely separated from bliss, possessing a one-pointed mind, and having the feeling of equanimity as a limb of benefit. The formless also has two divisions by way of birth and entering into absorption, the first being the innate qualities of the mindstreams of sentient beings born in the four realms of infinite space, etc. The second is a one-pointed mind with its concomitants that transcends the lower realms by way of its object, and this also has the four realms of infinite space, etc. Among these, the sphere of infinite space is when, during the preparatory stage, the perception of form is completely destroyed, and one thinks, "Space is infinite," then during the actual stage, that itself becomes manifest.

It is the one-pointedness of mind together with its concomitants. The sphere of infinite consciousness is the consciousness that contemplates infinite space, and by contemplating that consciousness as infinite, that itself becomes manifest. The sphere of nothingness is when one contemplates that there is nothing to be grasped beneath it, and that itself becomes manifest. The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception is: perception is disease, boils, and thorns; non-perception is complete blindness; neither perception nor non-perception is peaceful and excellent, and by contemplating thus, that itself becomes manifest, it is the one-pointedness of mind together with its concomitants. Why are the meditations said to be surpassed by their limbs? Because all the meditations are of the nature of both tranquility and coarseness. There is no distinction between the object and the aspect, but there is a distinction between the different limbs. Therefore, the meditations are said to be surpassed by their limbs. Why are the formless ones surpassed by their objects? Because they are all of one taste in tranquility, there is no distinction between the different limbs, but the objects and aspects are different and distinct. Therefore, they are said to be surpassed by their objects. Furthermore, the meditations and the first three of the formless realms have three each: afflicted, purified, and undefiled. The sphere of neither perception nor non-perception has two, excluding the undefiled. The proximities have two in the first: undefiled and purified, and the rest have only purified. Why do the proximities not have the afflicted? Because these are the paths that lead to detachment from desire, and the afflicted cannot lead to detachment from desire. Why do the remaining proximities not have the undefiled? Because one who has not attained the actual basis of the lower cannot enter into the proximity of the higher, and one who has attained the proximity of the higher practices the path based on the actual basis of the lower, because it is easier to practice the path from the proximity of the higher than from the actual basis of the lower. Thus, the afflicted one is the one-pointedness of mind that is in accordance with the afflictions of its own realm.

Also, the four are meditations with a strong emphasis on desire, and so on. Purity refers to the single-pointed virtue, along with its corresponding factors, that is not tainted by the afflictions of its own realm. These are the four: the part of decline, the part of abiding, the part of distinction, and the part of ascertainment. Among these, the part of decline is when, upon entering a pure meditation, afflictions of one's own realm or a lower realm arise and are in accordance with it. The part of abiding is when, upon entering, it draws forth another pure meditation of the same realm as oneself. The part of distinction is when, upon entering, it draws forth a pure meditation of a higher realm. The part of ascertainment is when, upon entering, it draws forth the path that transcends the world. The peak of existence does not have the part of distinction, because there is no other realm above it. For the others, it should be understood that all four are possible. The uncontaminated is the path that transcends the world. Second, the meaning of what is to be known: The objects to be known, meditation and the formless, these as the meaning of what is to be known, should be understood in four ways, such as pervasive afflictions. First, the four roots that obscure and are unspecified are desire and so on, because they cause the minds of meditators to have the nature of obscuration and unspecified. How so? Desire causes meditators who are heavily inclined towards desire to be defiled by pervasive afflictions, because they savor the taste of highly cultivated bliss. View causes meditators who are heavily inclined towards views to be defiled by pervasive afflictions, because relying on meditation gives rise to views that speculate on the past, and so on. Pride causes meditators who are heavily inclined towards pride to be defiled by pervasive afflictions, because if they attain distinction, their minds become conceited. Ignorance causes meditators who are heavily inclined towards doubt to be defiled by pervasive afflictions, because, not realizing suchness, those who desire liberation doubt whether the samadhi they have attained is liberation or not. For that very reason, it is said that these four are the roots of the unspecified. Purification refers to pure meditation and the formless, because they are virtuous and free from the pervasive entanglement of afflictions of their own realm.
