Because it is completely mastered by mindfulness, awareness, and equanimity, it does not perform the activity of mental agitation, therefore it is not called joy. Looking inward, it is called bliss because it benefits the body, including the senses. Why are there neither more nor fewer than four dhyanas? Because the grounds of dhyana seek to necessarily arise from feelings of pleasure and pain, but do not seek to necessarily arise from equanimity. This is because it is difficult for children to understand the suffering of formation. There are two kinds of painful feelings: gross and subtle. The first dhyana necessarily arises from gross painful feelings because it is free from desire from unpleasantness. The second dhyana also necessarily arises from subtle pain because it is free from the faults on the side of suffering. The first dhyana does not necessarily arise from all suffering, because it has not abandoned the faculty of suffering. As it is said in the Distinguishing the Definitive and the Indefinitive: 'Why has the first dhyana not abandoned the faculty of suffering?' It is said, 'Because it has not separated from the faults on its side.' If it had abandoned the faculty of suffering, then the difference between the second dhyana and its basis would not be discernible, therefore it should be understood that it has not abandoned it.' This is what was said. There are also two kinds of pleasant feelings, gross and subtle, and the third dhyana should be understood to have abandoned them. This is what was said. There are also two kinds of pleasant feelings, gross and subtle, and the third dhyana necessarily arises from the gross faculty of pleasure, because it is free from desire from pleasantness. The fourth is also free from desire from the faculty of pleasure, therefore it also necessarily arises from subtle pleasant feelings. Therefore, the four dhyanas are established from the perspective of necessarily arising from the four aspects of gross and subtle feelings of pleasure and pain. As it is said in the Summary of Distinguishing the Definitive and the Indefinitive: 'Why are there only four dhyanas? Neither more nor less?' It is said, 'Because it completely transcends pleasure and pain,'

It is for the sake of completion. Thus, gradually up to the fourth dhyana, it is because one has completely transcended happiness and suffering. So it is said. Thus, the dhyanas are distinguished by arising with certainty from feeling, and the formless ones are distinguished by arising with certainty from perception. How is that? There are two kinds of perception: perception of external form and perception that grasps the inner consciousness as self. The first, the perception that grasps form as self, also has two aspects: the perception of form and obstruction to be abandoned, and its antidote, the perception of space. Arising with certainty from the first perception is the sphere of infinite space. Arising with certainty from the second perception is the sphere of infinite consciousness. The perception that grasps consciousness as self also has two aspects, distinguished by the difference between the unfavorable side and the antidote. Arising with certainty from the first is the sphere of nothingness, and arising with certainty from the second is the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. Therefore, the four formless realms are neither more nor less. Why are the dhyanas fixed at five or four limbs? Because there must be three: the antidote limb that eliminates harm, the benefit limb that accomplishes benefit, and the place limb that is the location of both. Why are no limbs distinctly established for the formless realms? Because they are of one taste in quiescence, so there is no distinct establishment of different limbs. The establishment of samadhi is through seven kinds of attention, from the first dhyana to the realm of neither perception nor non-perception, entering into samadhi. The seven kinds of attention are, such as, the attention of thoroughly understanding characteristics. Among these, the attention of thoroughly understanding characteristics is the attention of the coemergent ground, which, through the faults of the lower grounds such as the desire realm, such as short life and many afflictions, are seen as coarse, and the higher grounds such as the first dhyana, through the opposite of that, are seen as the nature of peace and are examined. That should be understood as the nature of the mixture of hearing and thinking. Arising from aspiration
