Those noble ones who have attained [liberation] do not seek to be born in the formless realm, but rather, from the clear path of abandonment, they abide in the distinguished path, and thus they enter into the formless, peaceful liberation. Both [situations] refer to those who seek to be free from desire and abide in the path of abandonment, and thus enter into the formless, peaceful liberation. Neither [situation] refers to those who are not among those situations. As explained in the commentary. In the commentary on the Treasury [of Knowledge], it is said that one who previously attained cessation, but later completely degenerates and is born in the form realm, due to the power of previous habituation, can manifest cessation there. The division of the small path and so forth into three types is to show that those to be abandoned by meditation are abandoned gradually. Among them, the smallest of the small path and so forth, the three, are in order, which path abandons the greatest of the great aspects of affliction and so forth from the first ground. Similarly, apply it to others as well. Why does the smallest of the small path abandon the greatest of the great affliction? Because afflictions are extremely devoid of shame and embarrassment, they arise in the mind stream without hesitation. Therefore, what is easy to recognize and easy to cut off is like a large stain, which can be removed by a small antidote. What is difficult to cut off, arises in the stream, and is subtle, is like a small stain, which can be removed by the power of a great antidote. Therefore, it should be understood that the opposing side is reversed, and the antidote side is established. The path of joining is the path by which one is separated from each part of the suffering of the great aspects of affliction and so forth. Therefore, in its aftermath, that aspect of affliction will be abandoned. The path of non-interruption is the path by which all afflictions will be abandoned without interruption below. The path of liberation is the path by which, having abandoned afflictions, one manifests the liberation of transformation of the basis. The distinguished path has three ways of being established: from the gate of the later path, from the gate of action, and from the gate of qualities. The first is from the greatest of the great aspects of affliction, to the other great among the
