The Ocean of Good Explanation, a Detailed Commentary on the Compendium of the Holy Dharma Abhidharma. Lower Volume. The Ocean of Good Explanation, a Detailed Commentary on the Compendium of the Holy Dharma Abhidharma. Lower Volume. Herein dwells the treatise entitled The Ocean of Good Explanation, a Detailed Commentary on the Compendium of the Holy Dharma Abhidharma. Lower Volume. Second chapter of the Compendium, Ascertainment of Truth. Having extensively explained the nature of the three dharmas, intending to subsequently and specifically ascertain the difficult-to-understand points, it is stated: What is ascertainment? This is to be understood through four points. Thus, the object of practice, the aim of manifest realization, specifically ascertaining the nature of the four truths is the ascertainment of truth. The practice itself, the cause and collection for manifest realization, specifically ascertaining is the ascertainment of dharma. The result of practice is twofold: self-benefit and other-benefit. Among these, self-benefit is the very dharma of realization, the individual who obtains it, the manifest realization to be obtained, and the distinctions of the qualities of the obtained result, specifically ascertaining is the ascertainment of attainment. Other-benefit is related to the dharma of scripture, aspects of guiding disciples, the manner of explaining sutras and treatises, aspects of defeating opponents, the manner of debating for the sake of opponents, aspects of understanding the intent of definitive meaning, and methods of explaining profound statements of hidden intent, specifically ascertaining are the ascertainments of related speech. Among these, intending to explain the ascertainment of truth for now, it is stated: What is the ascertainment of truth? This is also to be understood through three aspects: the divisions of truth, the individual natures of each, and the characteristics of truth, the distinction between mundane and supramundane. The first is the four noble truths, like an unpleasant disease, first to be known in its nature by yogis, is the truth of suffering. Subsequently, like the cause of disease, to be abandoned through effort, is the truth of origin. Subsequently, like being without disease, to be made manifest, is the truth of cessation. Subsequently, for the sake of these meanings, to be diligently relied upon, are the truths of the path. Why

If asked, why are these called Noble Truths? Because these natures of suffering and the arising of suffering, etc., are seen as they are by the Noble Ones, but not by ordinary people. Therefore, they are called Noble Truths. If asked, why are they called Truths? Because they do not contradict the teachings, and those who see them become purified, therefore they are Truths. Among them, the meaning of being in accordance with the teachings is that these sufferings, etc., as taught, even if those who follow reason examine them, remain the same and cannot be changed in their form. Therefore, it is said that they do not contradict the teachings. Therefore, in the 'Collection of Ascertainments,' it says: 'What is the meaning of Truth? It is said: The meaning of the characteristic of not contradicting the teachings, the meaning of seeing it as the cause of becoming purified, is the meaning of Truth.' This is what is said. Furthermore, in the same scripture, it is asked: 'What is the meaning of the Truth of Suffering?' It is said: 'The meaning of formations arising from afflictions.' It is asked: 'What is the meaning of the Truth of Origin?' It is said: 'The meaning of generating the Truth of Suffering.' It is asked: 'What is the meaning of the Truth of Cessation?' It is said: 'The meaning of the pacification of both of those.' It is asked: 'What is the meaning of the Truth of the Path?' It is said: 'The meaning of accomplishing those three meanings.' Thus, the individual natures and order of the Truths are explained. As it is said, the order of explanation of the Four Noble Truths is: first, what leads to suffering; second, how suffering arises; third, how happiness is attained after eliminating the dark side; and fourth, how happiness is attained, like disease, its cause, absence of disease, and medicine. Another explanation is that the order of the Truths should be arranged according to the order in which worldly beings experience suffering. Just as worldly beings, when first afflicted by any kind of suffering, think about it; then they think about where it comes from; then they think about liberation from that suffering; then they think about the means of liberation from that suffering.' This is what is said.
