The destruction, that is, the cessation, of the contaminated formations such as the six sense sources, from which one enters into the cessation of nirvana without remainder, is not other. Thus, nirvana is not completely separated by the cessation of all contaminated dharmas, because that would be a fault. Nor is it non-other, because nirvana cannot completely sever the nature of the exhaustion of all formations. Therefore, it is neither other nor non-other, nor both, nor neither, because that is contradictory and there is no other possibility. Why is it always absent there and then? Because nirvana is without the elaboration of the four extremes. Elaboration is improper attention in this context of showing the truth of cessation, like the expression, "The object of thought is other, and the thinker is other." And why is that? Because the object of thought, the truth of cessation or nirvana itself, is free from the four extremes, but is thought of as the four extremes. That very thing is established by scripture, namely, the Blessed One said that if one thinks of the six sense sources of contact, such as the eye, as completely exhausted, etc., and that the cessation of nirvana exists elsewhere, or does not exist, or is both, or is neither, then thinking of the four extremes is elaborating on nirvana, which is without elaboration, by attending to it improperly. In short, as long as the six sense sources exist, even if there are no afflictions, coarse feelings of pleasure and pain and the perceptions that follow them arise, which is elaboration. When the six sense sources cease, the elaboration that disturbs the continuum, such as feelings and perceptions, disappears. Therefore, the complete cessation of the six sense sources is shown to be nirvana without remainder. The third is that which is merely the weakening of the seeds of affliction by the worldly path, which is called the cessation of convention, because the seeds have not been truly destroyed. Even so, there is the convention of "abandoning afflictions." Therefore, because it is the cessation of convention, it is called a branch of nirvana in the classification of worldly meditation.

I think so. Even worldly meditations can temporarily escape the suffering of the underworld. Therefore, one of its branches is called Nirvana. The cessation that is the abandonment of the seeds to be abandoned, which is thoroughly destroyed by the wisdom of the noble ones, is called the true cessation, because it makes the phenomena to be abandoned of a nature that never arises. The abandonment included in the fruit of those in training, such as stream-enterers, is called incomplete cessation, because the abandonment is not complete. The abandonment included in the fruit of the Arhats is called complete cessation, because all that is to be abandoned has been abandoned. The cessation of the Arhats who are liberated by wisdom is called without adornment, because it does not possess the adornments of clairvoyance and liberation, etc. The cessation of those who are liberated from both the obscurations of afflictions and meditative absorption is called with adornment, because it possesses the adornments of the three knowledges and six clairvoyances, etc. With remainder and without remainder are merely differences in understanding. The cessation included in Nirvana, which does not abide in the two extremes of existence and peace, is called particularly excellent, because it becomes the basis of benefit and happiness for all sentient beings, both temporarily and in the long term. The brief indication by name in terms of aspects is "completely abandoned," and so on. There are three detailed explanations of this: abandonment, qualities, and aspects of averting suffering. First, why is the truth of cessation called "completely abandoned"? Because it extends to "the remainder of the words disappears." Definite abandonment is because the manifestation of the entanglement of afflictions is abandoned. Becoming purified is because it completely perfects all the habits and seeds of afflictions. The abandonment of entanglement and habits themselves, by the distinction of being separated by the antidote paths—the path of seeing and the path of meditation—are called, in order, exhaustion and detachment. Cessation is because in the future, the fruit of that affliction—suffering—will not arise.
