Although it is said to exist from the beginning, it is merely not seen due to being obscured by obscurations. To say this is not reasonable. Like this, if there is even a slight establishment of what is called the truth of cessation as a complete severance, then at that time, it will change into this kind of conceptualization: "Does it exist from the beginning, or did it newly arise later?" Because there is no other possibility. If there is nothing else that is called the truth of cessation, and it is merely a non-affirming negation because it is separated from the latent predispositions of afflictions, and the self-nature of afflictions never arises again, then to examine whether its self-nature exists from the beginning or newly arises later is to doubt what is not the basis, which is the behavior of a fool, just like examining whether a rabbit's horn is sharp or dull. If it is said that a rabbit's horn does not exist at all, so it is unreasonable to examine whether it is sharp or dull, but if the truth of cessation does not exist at all, then how can it be realized? I did not say that cessation does not exist, but I said that the self-nature that is established as cessation in cessation does not exist at all. Therefore, for something whose self-nature does not exist at all, to examine whether its self-nature exists from the beginning or arises later, how is this different from examining the sharpness or dullness of a rabbit's horn? It is not different, because they are the same. If that is the case, then how is "realizing cessation" explained? For any being, the mind that has the characteristic that afflictions will never arise again from then on, that is, the luminosity of the self-nature of mind, directly perceiving it is what obtains the name "realizing cessation." For example, when directly observing a certain place, one says, "Realized the absence of a pot." If the luminosity of the self-nature of mind is the truth of cessation, and it exists from the beginning, then I would not say that it does not exist from the beginning. However, in the impure state, it does not even obtain the name of the truth of cessation, because cessation is distinguished by abandoning afflictions. When the latent predispositions of afflictions are destroyed, then it obtains the name of the truth of cessation, and due to the cooperative conditions of the immediately preceding moment of itself and non-conceptual wisdom, it has a completely pure self-nature.

Because it is newly produced, it does not exist from the beginning. It is a nominal cessation, but it is not the nature of cessation either. This has been said before. If the Prajnaparamita Sutra says, "Manjushri, what is called extinction is only complete extinction. What is complete extinction is not something to be extinguished." And also, "Extinction is not extinguished by an antidote. Because it is extinct from the beginning, therefore it is called extinct." and so on, are not many things said? How can it not be said that the mind, which is naturally luminous in its impure state, is the truth of cessation? These are because the mind is naturally luminous, and even in its impure state, it has never given rise to the nature of afflictions such as attachment. Therefore, it is said that attachment and so on are extinct from the beginning. If this alone can prove that cessation exists even in the impure state, then there is no dispute over names, and we will not deny that there is no mind that is naturally luminous in the continuum of sentient beings. However, the cessation that is the nature of not giving rise to afflictions must be accomplished by the path in every way, so it never exists in the impure state. If cessation is not a real entity, then how can it be accomplished by the path? Although the path does not do anything to the nature of cessation itself, it is only because the subsequent mind arises as the nature of not giving rise to afflictions from the co-operative condition of the path and the immediately preceding moment of mind, that the term "the path has accomplished cessation" is obtained. For example, because of the immediately preceding moment of the pot and the co-operative condition of the hammer, the state of rubble arises, and the world says that the hammer destroyed the pot. Those who are Particularists (the Sarvastivadins of Hinayana), who consider the so-called "discriminating cessation" to be "separation, each, each is," and consider the truth of cessation to be the nature of a separate, real, and permanent entity, do not think that the path can produce the nature of cessation. However, the path only produces the attainment that makes cessation exist in the continuum, so that separate, real, and permanent thing is the result of separation from the path.
