Among the two, which are teaching the basis and teaching the general characteristics, the first is a brief explanation: The truth of cessation, the object to be known, should be understood by twelve aspects such as the meaning and nature to be known. First, regarding the nature, identifying the essence from three aspects: In this context, the word "cessation" is related to the agent and the object, so the term "cessation" applies to all three: the basis of what is to be done, where it ceases, by what it ceases, and what is ceased by the nature of the action. Therefore, the basis of what is to be done, where it ceases, is the Suchness that is the nature of the mind's self-luminous nature. What ceases it is the truth of the path, which is the nature of realizing selflessness. What is ceased by the nature of the action is the cessation of discrimination, which is the nature of not arising permanently because the seeds of all afflictions such as desire are destroyed. Among them, Suchness is the emptiness of non-existence, and the emptiness of the nature of non-existence, divided into two types by difference. The first is the emptiness in which the two selves of person and phenomena have never existed from the beginning in the unreal pervasive thought, and is the nature of non-affirming negation. This is not suitable here as the object to be refuted by the path to eliminate afflictions, because it itself has no nature and cannot be defiled by desires, etc., and whatever has not been defiled by afflictions cannot be purified by the paths. The second is the self-nature of the consciousnesses such as the alaya consciousness, which from the beginning has not been defiled by the impurity of the two grasped and grasper of the pervasive imputation, and is self-aware and clear like a lamp. That itself is also called the self-luminous nature of the mind. It is also called the ultimate truth of non-dual wisdom. It is also called the emptiness of the nature of non-existence. That itself, in all states, is called Suchness because it does not change from its own non-dual nature. Although it arises as an instantaneous nature from cause and condition, it is self-aware and clear in nature, and in all states of purity and impurity.

Therefore, since there is no difference, it is also called permanent and unconditioned. This itself is the basis for the Truth of the Path to eliminate all afflictions, because in the impure state, it is made afflictive by desire and so on, and whatever is made afflictive by the afflictions is purified by the Path. Otherwise, it is unreasonable to say that the affliction itself is purified by the Path, because the basis for being afflicted by desire and so on and for being purified by faith and so on are different. Such a mind, luminous by its own nature, is called naturally pure when the habitual tendencies of afflictions such as desire have not been abandoned. When the Path has destroyed all the habitual tendencies of afflictions, it obtains the name of being purified even from adventitious stains. Therefore, the mind, luminous by its own nature, is the Suchness that has become the basis for the Path to eliminate afflictions. The nature of cessation is: On the basis of what is to be eliminated, the separate self-cognizance cessation where afflictions never arise becomes the nature of non-affirming negation. That is the Suchness of the basis of what is to be eliminated, and from that Suchness, it cannot be said to be either itself or other. For example, in the impure state, the emptiness of non-entity and the essence of non-entity, emptiness, are neither the same nor different. Just as in the impure state, the essence of non-entity, emptiness, is emptiness in name only, but is not the nature of emptiness, and the emptiness of non-entity is the nature of emptiness itself. Similarly, when the state has transformed into purity, the Suchness of the basis of what is to be eliminated is cessation in name only, but is not the nature of cessation itself, and the separate self-cognizance cessation of the nature of non-arising afflictions is the nature of the Truth of Cessation itself. Therefore, some say that the Truth of Cessation is permanent, otherwise it would be newly arising from what did not exist before. Therefore, the Truth of Cessation, even in the impure state, has no difference in nature from the pure state.
