Therefore, this name is established. Because by the path, one becomes free from afflictions, and thereby obtains cessation. Some also say that the truth of cessation is inherently permanent, and the path merely makes it manifest. Saying this is only a difference in name, and there is no difference from those who consider cessation to be substantially existent. The Sutra School does not consider the nature of cessation to be in accordance with what is explained here; they consider it to be a non-affirming negation, an utter nothingness. However, they consider it to be merely a negation that is separate from the object to be negated. Here, however, the very nature of self-luminousness is acknowledged as the object to be negated, so the difference lies there. Why do these schools not acknowledge an object to be negated? Because when a yogi abides in the transcendental path, all other contaminated entering consciousnesses, except for the antidote, cease. Furthermore, they do not acknowledge the alaya-consciousness. The antidote itself is also not logically the object to be negated that eliminates afflictions, because the abode of afflictions does not reside there. Here, however, the alaya-consciousness, which possesses the abode of afflictions, continues to follow even when the path manifests, and therefore it becomes the abode of the path. Because of this, its reality, which is self-luminous by nature, is logically the object to be negated where afflictions cease. According to the treatises of the noble Nagarjuna, the cessation where the antidote destroys what is to be abandoned is not considered to be either substantially existent or nominally existent. Since both the antidote and what is to be abandoned are like illusions, without inherent existence in their essence, what destroys what? Therefore, when a yogi fully understands that all phenomena are unborn from the very beginning, it is said that they have realized cessation and nirvana. This is a name established based on the conventional truth. As it is said in the "Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning": When a thing arises and decays, how can there be a conceptualization of cessation? Likewise, the noble ones also assert a cessation like an illusion. Cessation occurs through complete destruction, but not through the consciousness of conditioned phenomena. Then to whom will it be manifest? What is this "decay" like?

That is what was said, etc. Thus, for the four schools of tenets, the Vaibhashika and Sautrantika, respectively, consider it to be a permanent substance and merely a non-affirming negation that only prevents what should be abandoned. In this Yogachara system, Suchness, which is characterized by its naturally luminous nature, is considered a non-affirming negation that is destroyed by the antidote of afflictions. The Madhyamikas consider that dependent arising, which from the beginning is separated from arising and ceasing, etc., and is inexpressible, is itself given the name "cessation," which is the meaning in brief. Secondly, to establish it with scripture, it is said in the sutras that the cessation of the contaminated sense bases and aggregates is cessation, as it says in the sutra: "From where does the ocean turn back? From where does the path turn back? Where do all the sufferings and pleasures of the world cease?" In response to the question, it is said: "Where the eye and ear, and likewise the nose and tongue and body, the mind and likewise name and form, all cease without exception, there the ocean turns back, and there the path turns back." Here, the ocean is the six internal sense bases, such as the eye, because when consciousness enters the object through these gates, afflictions will increase, so it is the abode of the dragon of afflictions. The path is the two, karma and afflictions, because relying on these, one travels to the realm of the five destinies. All of these without exception will cease in the realm of nirvana without remainder of aggregates. That is its meaning. Showing cessation by the cessation of the eighteen elements, suchness is where the element of the eye ceases, and the consciousness of color associated with eye consciousness disappears, up to the element of dharma ceases, and the consciousness of dharma associated with mind consciousness disappears, that is to be understood as the abode or support of sentient beings. These two types of scripture show that whatever is both suchness and the object of wisdom, where all contaminated things included in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases cease, is shown as the characteristic of cessation. Second, contaminated is
