Those who do not develop great shame and embarrassment are not truly restrained even by the remaining roots of what has not been actually committed. Because if they have a basis for proximity, there is no opportunity for a powerful antidote to arise in their minds that would prevent them from engaging in those actions. Therefore, even if one root downfall is committed, all vows that have been properly taken are lost, because from then on, they no longer have the capacity to properly restrain all immoral conduct in their minds. Thus, the example from the sutras, such as "When the head of a tala tree is cut, it cannot become green again," is also well-suited. But according to the view that committing one root downfall does not diminish other things to be abandoned, it would be unreasonable to give examples, because the example would be meaningless. Furthermore, it is not the case that taking one means taking all, because vows arising from agreement depend on proper taking, not merely on refraining from all courses of action, since unpleasant sounds and the like are uncertain. The activity of vows has been explained. Secondly, the nature of non-vows is: wrong aspirations, lack of faith, laziness, forgetfulness, distraction, and corrupted wisdom. Among these, not desiring the results of sinful actions in the future, not believing and not desiring them, this is lack of faith. To be manifestly delighted in sinful actions and to engage in them willingly, and not being pleased to subdue them, this is laziness. Not remembering faults and sinful dharmas in the mind, this is forgetfulness. The mindstream being disturbed, afflicted, and unstable, this is distraction. The perverted mindstream that sees faults as virtues, this is corrupted wisdom. Whose are these non-vows? Butchers and so forth are mentioned. Among these, a butcher is one who slaughters animals and makes a living by selling them. Killing crows and so on is also the same, according to what is appropriate.

It should be combined in this way. Slaughtering rabbits refers to capturing rabbits. Thieves refer to those who take what is not given. Executioners refer to those who kill people to be executed by the king. Elephant tamers refer to those who capture elephants from the forest and tame them. Living by snakes refers to those who catch snakes and nurture them with affection. Listening to others refers to those who make a living by flattering and cajoling others. In short, it refers to the evil-wishing bodhisattva who engages in harming others in every way. How is this karma obtained? Those who are born into the lineage of butchers and others who engage in such occupations obtain it when they are able to engage in these occupations. Those who are born into other lineages obtain it when they vow, "I will make a living by this karma," or when they generate the intention themselves. In short, they obtain it when they are determined to engage in these karmas. As it is said: "By engaging in non-vow activities, or by promising to do so, one obtains it." How is it relinquished? As it is said: "Through obtaining vows, death, and the occurrence of hermaphroditism." It is as it is said. The third, karma that is neither vow nor non-vow, refers to virtuous actions such as generosity and pleasant speech, which do not possess the characteristics of both vows and non-vows, and insignificant non-virtuous actions such as punching and kicking. Therefore, for those who have vows, intermediate non-virtuous actions also occur; and for those who have non-vows, intermediate virtuous actions also occur. Fourth, explaining from the perspective of the nature of the result: the virtuous actions of the desire realm and the first three dhyanas are karma that will lead to experiencing happiness, because in those realms there is a feeling of happiness gathered by maturation. Non-virtuous actions are karma that will lead to experiencing suffering, because all feelings of suffering gathered by maturation are the result of non-virtuous actions. The virtuous actions from the third dhyana upwards to the fourth dhyana are karma that will lead to experiencing equanimity, because above that there is freedom from attachment to happiness. Fifth, explaining from the perspective of the time of experiencing, there are three types, and the first characteristic is: karma that is done in this very life, in this very life...
