Not relying on another's wife, one does not harm oneself; not relying on another's wife, one does not harm others. Abstaining from false speech is the third branch. Abstaining from wine, modified wine, mixed wine, and the three places other than places of negligence is the fourth branch. Why is that? Because, like this, constantly relying on the sounds of dance, song, and music, garlands of incense and flowers, high beds, and untimely food, when one briefly sees oneself in a solitary place, one thinks, "I have performed the Uposatha," and thus constantly abides in mindfulness. Abstaining from wine and so on is the fifth branch, because even if one thinks, "I abide in mindfulness," that branch, being intoxicated and confused by wine, will lead one to act involuntarily. The latter three branches are the precepts belonging to the layperson's side, and these precepts can be taken by oneself and also taken from others. If one has already taken these precepts by oneself, why take them from others? These two are the abandonment of breaking the precepts, and are the branches of following and protecting the precepts after having properly taken them, namely, knowing shame and having embarrassment. When properly taken from others, although the basis for cutting off all faults is near, the fear arising from relying on others and relying on oneself is also near, therefore one must properly take them from others. If one's conduct is not close to negligence, and one properly takes and solely protects oneself, then one should know that for such conduct, the merits are the same and without difference. Why is it that in the Uposatha vows, the acceptance of gold and silver is prohibited, while in the Śrāmaṇera vows, the prohibition of accepting gold and silver is prescribed? Because the Śrāmaṇera abides in the direction of renunciation, and for a renunciate, there are two behaviors that are very inappropriate and not in accordance with the rules, namely, being greedy for gain and falling into the state of begging, and being diligent in playing and dressing up as one pleases.

It is the enjoyment of worldly things. To abandon the first situation that is incompatible with discipline, one must abandon everything from the sounds of singing, dancing, and music, to untimely food. To abandon the second situation that is incompatible with discipline, one must abandon accepting gold and silver, because gold and silver are the root and main source of all accumulation. For householders, the fault of accumulation is not so great, and there is nothing incompatible with discipline, so the precept of abandoning the acceptance of gold and silver is not included as a branch of the upavāsa vow. Why is it that whatever involves singing, dancing, the sound of music, and holding incense, garlands, and unguents is considered one branch in the precepts of the upavāsa vow, but is made into two branches for the novice monk? Because for householders, if they violate these, they only need to confess one fault; to avoid having to confess two faults, they are combined into one training. However, since this is incompatible with the discipline of the ordained, if they violate it, they must confess two faults; to avoid having to confess only one fault, the rule is made stricter and divided into two branches. What are the divisions and classifications of these precepts? Those precepts that are properly taken, if divided in detail, can be known to belong to one hundred categories. These are: ten for abandoning each of the paths of the ten non-virtuous actions, ten for abandoning most of them, ten for abandoning all of them, ten for abandoning them for a short time, ten for abandoning them for a long time, ten for abandoning them for as long as one lives, ten for abandoning them oneself, ten for causing others to abandon them, ten for repeatedly reciting these, and ten for rejoicing and being pleased to see others abandon them. All of these can be divided into eight types: the precepts of initiation, the precepts of adherence, the precepts of constant protection, the precepts of renunciation, the small precepts, the medium precepts, the great precepts, and the completely pure precepts. Among these, the first is when, before properly taking the precepts, one mentally prepares by thinking, "I will properly take the abandonment." The second is when one properly takes and upholds the abandonment. After that, the abandonment of
