If it is said that in states of mental distraction and mindlessness, it is impossible to vow to manifest the mind of renunciation because one lacks the ability and it is unnecessary, then it is unreasonable. Even so, it is not the case that one does not possess vows in those states, because the mind of renunciation has power. Moreover, it has already been explained that this possession is of the nature of three: seed, power, and manifestation. Therefore, as long as mindfulness is present, the very mind that actively engages in abandoning the basis of immoral conduct is the vow that has been correctly taken. This is reasonable. The mind of renunciation is manifest when the basis of opposing factors is near, and when the basis is not near, it exists as power or seed. Therefore, there is no contradiction in saying that the vow continuously exists until the end of life. The mind of renunciation does not exist as a non-cognitive form established by others, so there is no fault of not understanding. For it is understood through one's own experience, and others can understand it through the speech of body and mind. Therefore, the scriptures say that the correct limit of action is a branch of believing in the purity of others' morality. If the vow is not a form, why does it not continue after death, since the body is destroyed and the mind-stream is cut off? This is unreasonable. If it is said that it does not continue because the duration of the vow has been completed, then this proves that the vow depends on the body. Otherwise, why not take the vow until one is liberated from suffering? If it is said that the mind does not continue until then, then according to those who believe that the vow depends on the body, why is the vow of the upavāsa abandoned after the night has passed? The body, which is the basis of the vow, does not cease to exist even after that. If it is said that it is because the vow has been completed, then if the body, which is the basis of the vow, continues until the end of life, why not take the vow until the end of life? That is, that person is afflicted

If someone says, 'Because I am dull, I cannot protect it from then on, therefore I will not take it until the end of my life.' Then, this is the same. Just like this, because the beings to be tamed remember that they have truly taken it until the end of their lives, they are able to protect the vows. When they die, because they do not remember that they have truly taken it, they are unable to protect it. Therefore, do not promise more than the duration of life. If so, should the bodhisattva's precepts also be taken until the end of life? No, it is not. Bodhisattvas should put on great armor, have a vast mind, and strive to take on great power. If it is determined that it is only until the end of life, then it cannot be considered putting on great armor, and they will not be happy with great deeds, which contradicts their own vows. If they promise until they attain enlightenment, they will be happy with great deeds and have great mental strength. Therefore, whether they remember that they have truly taken it after death or not, because it has great significance, they promise until enlightenment. Furthermore, the fruit of the bodhisattva's precepts, great enlightenment, is impossible to achieve in one lifetime. The fruit of the Pratimoksha vows of the Hearers, Nirvana, can be achieved even in one lifetime. Those who seek Nirvana must generate hope and strong effort to realize Nirvana in this life, even if they cannot be sure that it will be achieved in this life. Because seeking existence in the next life is not part of those who desire Nirvana. Therefore, the vows of the Hearers are not taken for more than the duration of life. Secondly, there are three parts to the separate explanation. The first part is the Pratimoksha vows, which are divided into differences, examination of the individual, and special explanation of the Upasaka. The first part is the eight categories, among which the vows of the Bhikshu are the four Parajikas, the thirteen Sanghavasesas, the thirty Nissaggiya Pacittiyas, and the separate explanation.
