So it is. Regarding the formations of dependent origination, their individual natures are: Merit, and whatever arises such as karma, wherein merit is the virtue of the desire realm, because it produces desirable fruits. The virtue of the higher realms is encompassed by immovability. Non-merit is non-virtue, because it produces undesirable fruits. Immovability is the virtue of the form and formless realms. As in the desire realm, some actions that perfect behavior completely perfect other beings, just as virtue is perfected in other beings. In the form and formless realms, behavior is not like that, because it produces fruits determined by location, and because it is a place of equipoise, it does not waver due to the faults of the lower grounds. Even in the desire realm, the maturation of projecting karma never wavers, because that which projects the maturation of good destinies never projects the maturation of bad destinies, and bad destinies are not good destinies. The maturation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions that perfect behavior arises in the continuums of both good and bad destinies, because there is no contradiction, so it may waver in other beings, therefore it is not immovable. The way these are produced by ignorance is: due to the condition of ignorance, actions such as merit are formations. As it is said, it is reasonable that non-merit arises from ignorance, but how do merit and immovable formations arise from the condition of ignorance? Because these arise from the three roots of virtue. If it is said that the delusion of karma manifesting as formations is of two kinds: the first is being deluded about the maturation of the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions, not knowing that these will produce desirable and undesirable maturations. This produces the manifestation of non-virtuous action, because the person who possesses this delusion does not believe in the relationship of karma and its effects, so they do not possess the correct view, therefore they engage in non-virtue solely for the sake of happiness in this life. The second is being deluded about the true meaning of the noble truths. This produces the manifestation of meritorious and immovable karma, because that is correct.

Even if one has already acquired a certain view, because it is associated with all those who have not seen the truth, therefore, due to its influence, one does not truly understand that the three realms are suffering. Therefore, in order to obtain the desired happiness in the next life, one diligently accumulates meritorious actions; in order to obtain the happiness of meditative absorption, one diligently accumulates unwavering actions. The afflictions of the ten non-virtuous actions, such as the desire to kill living beings and eat meat, are driven by attachment. Those who desire to eat meat are driven by hatred. Those who desire to make offerings, etc., are driven by ignorance. Everything culminates in hatred, for if there were no compassion, one would not kill sentient beings. Even harsh speech, speaking for praise and happiness, is driven by attachment. If one speaks based on the nine objects of torment, it is driven by hatred. If one speaks for the sake of the guru or offerings, it is driven by ignorance. The same is true for harmful intent. As for taking what is not given, if one clings to the possessions of others and begins to act, it is driven by attachment. If it is not so, but one acts to harm others, it is driven by hatred. If one acts for the sake of the guru and offerings, it is driven by ignorance. Everything culminates in attachment, for if there were no attachment to the possessions of others, one would not take them. Adultery is also the same; if one clings to the women of others and begins to act, it is driven by attachment. If one acts with the desire to fully accept friends or to repay kindness, it is driven by ignorance. If one acts based on the nine objects of torment, it is driven by hatred. As for covetousness, if one clings to the possessions and belongings of others, thinking, 'May whatever belongs to others become mine!' then it should be said that this arises from attachment. If it is not so, but one relies on the nine objects of torment, thinking, 'May whatever belongs to others become mine!' and thus generates this thought, then it arises from hatred. If one dwells repeatedly with a mind that seeks Vishnu, Shiva, Indra, and so on, then
