Good precedes, because it is the cause of the desired good result. Similarly, the aggregates of maturation in the lower realms can also be inferred to have non-virtuous causes preceding them. It is merely in name that we call virtue and non-virtue the producers of good and bad maturation results; there is nothing else besides that. The four modes of projection are: there is also the case where one aggregate body is projected by maturation in a single moment of the completion of an action, because one action only nourishes the seed of maturation for one lifetime. One action projects multiple bodies because it nourishes the seeds of maturation for multiple lifetimes. Multiple actions project one body because many moments of action repeatedly nourish the seed of maturation for that one lifetime. Multiple actions project multiple bodies because many actions, in dependence on each other, nourish the seeds that continue from one lifetime to another. These are merely established based on scripture, and are not established by reasoning. As for which of the projected results matures first, it is said that sentient beings who possess many actions that produce various different kinds of maturation experience maturation in sequence, thinking that if the causes are equal, the results should occur simultaneously. In that case, whichever action is heavier, its result will mature first, because it is reasonable that a powerful cause quickly produces a result. If they are equal in weight, then whichever is nourished by circumstances and becomes manifest at the time of death will mature first, because the other remains dormant at the time of producing the result and is therefore weak. If the mind is not clear at the time of death and cannot manifest anything, then whichever is more habitual will mature first, because it is more powerful. If those are also the same, then it should be understood that the action performed first will mature first, because it is reasonable that the result occurs in accordance with the order of the cause. As it is said: "In samsara, whichever action is heavier, whichever is closer, whichever is more habitual, whichever was done earlier, from those actions, the earlier ones mature earlier."
