Furthermore, by fully understanding the nature of the three aspects of cause, effect, and essence, one abandons afflictions by not accepting their arising in the continuum. Not accepting means not letting them be or occur randomly, but viewing them as incompatible and faulty. Obtaining the antidote means finding and practicing paths such as the contemplation of impurity in order to abandon afflictions that have not yet arisen. How does one abandon them through mental engagement? There are two types of mental engagement: unmixed, which focuses on the individual characteristics of each phenomenon, and mixed, which focuses on the general characteristics. The first cannot abandon all afflictions because it does not focus on all the objects that are the basis for the arising of afflictions. Therefore, one abandons them by focusing on the mixed, general characteristics. However, it is not by focusing on just any general characteristic that one abandons them, but by mentally engaging with all phenomena included in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases as being without self in terms of essence and other entities. This is because all afflictions have ignorance characterized by delusion about self as their root, and this mental engagement is very contradictory to that characteristic. If afflictions could be abandoned simply by knowing selflessness, then what is the purpose of contemplating the remaining aspects of truth, such as conditioned things being impermanent and contaminated things being suffering? Contemplating aspects such as impermanence does not abandon afflictions because they are not directly contradictory to the aspect of delusion about self, and therefore cannot uproot ignorance. However, it is not meaningless for a yogi to contemplate them, because they completely tame the aspect of selflessness. For example, by relying on the aspect of impermanence, one obtains the aspect of suffering. By relying on the aspect of suffering, one obtains the aspect of selflessness. As it is said in the sutra: "Monks, is form permanent or impermanent? Venerable ones, it is impermanent. Whatever is impermanent, is it happiness or suffering? Venerable ones, it is suffering. Regarding that which is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change, is this me

It is like saying, "This is my face, this is my self," or like saying, "That venerable one is not." Why is the aspect of suffering obtained from the aspect of impermanence? Because impermanence belongs to both arising and ceasing. From the impermanence that belongs to arising, one realizes the suffering of suffering; from the impermanence that belongs to ceasing, one realizes the suffering of change. As it was said before. Or, if someone holds that conditioned things are stable and unchanging, then they will become attached to objects with defilements in a way that is agreeable and pleasing. If someone realizes that conditioned things are impermanent and of a moving nature, then they will hold that objects with defilements are not worthy of attachment and are of a disagreeable nature. Therefore, the aspect of suffering is obtained from the aspect of impermanence. Why is the aspect of selflessness obtained from the aspect of suffering? Because whoever grasps at self is attached to it with the aspect of desiring self. Whoever does not grasp at anything with the aspect of desire will not become attached to it. Whoever realizes that objects with defilements are themselves to be disgusted with as suffering will not see even a little of the nature of "self" to be attached to with the aspect of desire. Therefore, the aspect of selflessness is obtained from the aspect of suffering. Thus, it is also said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Liberation is attained by the view of emptiness; the remaining meditation is for that purpose. Therefore, from impermanence comes suffering; from suffering, selflessness is taught." That is what was said. Therefore, selflessness is the supreme knowledge. Starting from the supreme, there are three kinds of supreme: supreme knowledge, supreme path, and supreme liberation. Among these, supreme knowledge is the knowledge of selflessness, because there is no other knowledge to be sought beyond that. The supreme path is quick and easy direct perception, because it is the best of all paths. Supreme liberation is the dharma of the non-learner, the unshakeable.
