Whatever anger is, it is also a perverted adherence to cessation. And one is always distressed by things that are inconsistent with the previous view. Therefore, these eight afflictions are a perverted adherence to cessation and are to be abandoned by seeing cessation. How are these eight afflictions a perverted adherence to the path? For example, the wrong view that slanders the knowledge that "there are no arhats in the world," and the wrong view that the heretics claim that the truth of the path spoken by the ascetic Gautama does not exist. Also, the wrong view that "the path and practice that we practice is for the sake of ending suffering and is the path of definite liberation." These are all perverted adherences to the truth of the path. To these views, clinging to the view that they are supreme, and the precepts and asceticism that are in accordance with these views, are also perverted adherences to the truth of the path. The rest should be understood as the understanding of the truth of cessation. Therefore, these eight afflictions are a perverted adherence to the truth of the path and are also to be abandoned by seeing the path. Secondly, afflictions to be abandoned by meditation. In the desire realm, there are six afflictions to be abandoned by meditation, namely, the co-emergent view of self and the view of the extreme, and the four such as attachment that are perverted adherences to the object. In the form and formless realms, there are five abandonments of anger each. Therefore, these sixteen are abandoned by the ultimate habituation of the path, not just by seeing the truth, so they are to be abandoned by meditation. These defilements to be abandoned by meditation also follow the objects that are inherently defiled, and have existed for a long time. Therefore, they are difficult to separate and are perverted adherences to their own objects, not perverted adherences to the truths. The co-emergent view of self, even though the path of seeing has arisen, still causes the noble hearers to have the pride of "I am." As it is said: "The venerable Brahmin, I, to these aggregates of grasping,

Or, although it is not seen as mine, yet with regard to these five aggregates of taking, the pride of "I am," the desire of "I am," and the latent tendencies of "I am" have not been abandoned. They have not been fully known, not been prevented, not been made limitless. So it is said. For example, if a mother's garment becomes stained, it is thoroughly washed with alkali and the like. Although it becomes free of stains, because of attachment to it, there is still a slight odor remaining. It must be treated by fumigating it with a fragrant incense. Similarly, even the noble Hearers who have abandoned the defilement of the co-emergent view of the aggregates through the path of seeing, still manifestly cling to it. Because of habituation, the view of a self as a real entity still follows. This is to be abandoned through the habituation of the path. It should be understood that the co-emergent view of extremes is included in the view of annihilation. Because even the noble Hearers become weary of "What is my self?" Therefore, their minds turn away towards Nirvana. If it is said, are the co-emergent view of the aggregates and the view of extremes both wrongly engaged with the aspect of truth? Or are they not? If the former, why are they not abandoned by seeing the truth? If the latter, it is because they have the aspect of self and what belongs to self, and cling to permanence or annihilation. If someone asks whether it is reasonable, then all the aspects of afflictions are only wrongly engaged with the aspect of truth, because all are caused by improper attention. Therefore, in the Pramāṇavārttika it is also said: "Relying on the four truths, pleasure, self, and what is mine, sixteen are unreal, clinging and craving." So it is said. Some of these are wrongly engaged due to the force of habituation that has followed since beginningless time, while others are wrongly engaged due to sudden causes such as being taught by bad friends. Among these, that which is wrongly engaged due to sudden causes, like mistaking a rope for a snake, is impermanent, and therefore can be abandoned merely by seeing the truth. That which follows due to the force of habituation is that which has been habituated since beginningless time.
