Because of particularly clinging to the continuum with diligence, merely seeing the truth does not eliminate it. However, by repeatedly familiarizing oneself with seeing the truth, one will become extremely pure. Therefore, the afflictions to be abandoned through cultivation, even if they are wrongly attached to the appearance of truth, will not become what is abandoned by seeing. If sudden afflictions arise from causes such as the teachings of bad friends, when the part that is in accordance with the determination arises, will it not regress? If it is said that it is to be abandoned by seeing the truth, then the pervasive entanglement of these afflictions will not arise once it enters the state of being in accordance with the determination. However, as long as the truth is not directly realized, the latent tendencies are not abandoned. Because the parts that are in accordance with the determination are merely the attention that generates faith in the appearance of truth, they cannot abandon the latent tendencies. When the truth is directly realized, it eliminates all the latent tendencies of these afflictions, because from then on, the mindstream is no longer a vessel for generating such forms of afflictions. Therefore, these afflictions are to be abandoned by seeing the truth. There are three types of abandonment: how to abandon manifestation, with what kind of attention to abandon latent tendencies, and which afflictions to be abandoned are abandoned in the seed or manifestation. The first has three parts: first, fully understanding the nature of the three aspects of the cause, effect, and essence of afflictions; second, completely abandoning the afflictions that have arisen in the continuum; and finally, obtaining the antidote to those that have not arisen. Among them, complete understanding means fully understanding the basis of the affliction, the cause and object from which it arises, and the immediate conditions; fully understanding the nature of the affliction itself, which is the characteristic of the mind not being at peace; and fully understanding the faults of the affliction, which cause harm to oneself and others, both of which are the results of the actions of individuals. Generating faults in this life is the dominant result. Generating painful results in the future is the result of maturation, all of which must be fully understood. Complete abandonment
