Those who are attached engage in bad conduct with ignorance as the cause. The nature of outflows is: all the afflictions of the desire realm except for ignorance are the outflows of the desire realm, and the afflictions of the higher realms are the outflows of existence. The ignorance of the three realms is the outflow of ignorance. Why are they called outflows? Because the afflictions of the desire realm are of a distracted nature, they cause the mind to scatter outwards and look outwards. Because they cause outflows towards the qualities of desire, they are the outflows of desire. The afflictions of the higher realms are: even when looking inwards and abiding in samadhi, they cause outflows through craving for the feelings of absorption, etc., so they are the outflows of existence. Both of these outflows arise from the power of ignorance, and because they are the place of these outflows, the outflow of ignorance is established. The nature of poverty is the three, such as desire and attachment. Why is it called poverty? Because relying on them, one desires the possessions of existence, and because of the poverty of desire, it harms the body and mind, so it is poverty. The nature of complete burning is desire and attachment, etc. Why is it complete burning? Because relying on them, one grasps at the signs and appearances of pleasant and unpleasant objects in an inappropriate way, which completely burns the body and mind, so they are called complete burning. For example, grasping at "this is a man, this is a woman," and grasping at "blue, green, white," etc., is grasping at signs. Grasping at the hands and breasts of men and women, etc., as desirable, etc., is grasping at appearances. The nature of conflict is desire and attachment, etc. Why are they called conflicts? Because relying on them, one allows oneself to develop fondness and strong attachment to forms, etc., and if these change, they cause suffering and other afflictions to sentient beings, so they are conflicts. The nature of strife is desire and attachment, etc. Why is it called strife? Because relying on them, actions such as cutting with a weapon occur, so it is called strife. The nature of pestilence is the three, such as desire and attachment.

Mother! Why is it called "epidemic"? Because by relying on them, one becomes attached to non-dharmic and unwholesome things, as well as inappropriate theft, wrong livelihood, etc., attached to seeking resources through these means, and attached to showing the harm of wrong teachings as the right Dharma, thereby causing body and mind to be completely tormented by great suffering, hence they are called epidemics. The nature of forest combination is the three, namely, desire and so on. Why is it called "forest combination"? Because by relying on them, one becomes attached to the root of arising—the formations, thereby causing the tree of the bodies of beings in the five realms to manifest and accomplish in various forms, hence they are called forest combinations. The nature of obstacles is three, namely, desire and so on. Why is it called "obstacle"? Because by relying on them, due to the view of fearing the decline of body and enjoyment, the mind is not matured in the object of knowledge, and constantly spreading noisy words, etc., in the Sangha, like a ghost tree dwelling, and when starting to do good, being satisfied with doing only a little, therefore not combining with them, so they are obstacles. Wrong entry has two aspects. The respective wrong entries are: what should be abandoned by cultivating desire is wrongly entering into objects such as form and sound; what should be abandoned by the path of seeing is wrongly entering into views such as the view of the aggregates of destruction, because they only cling to them as suffering. Whatever attachment arises towards sentient beings is because it enters into the color, sound, etc., of sentient beings in a lovely form, so it is wrongly entering into the object. Similarly, anger is also wrongly entering into the object and view, because it enters into the form of extreme distress towards unlovely objects and disagreeable views. Anger towards sentient beings should be understood from the perspective of the object. Pride is wrongly entering into sentient beings because it clings to "I am greater than the small," etc.; because it holds its own view as the most supreme and is proud in its heart, it is wrongly entering into the view. The view of the aggregates of destruction, the extreme view, and the wrong view are wrongly understanding by falsely adding and respecting the aggregates of knowledge. If the view of the aggregates of destruction is because of clinging to "I," it is towards sentient beings.
