It causes the mind to wander. Relying on harmful thoughts, disputes and downfalls occur, and because one does not act according to the Dharma, one cannot accomplish things well. Therefore, when one attains samadhi, the mind becomes distracted. Relying on holding precepts and asceticism as supreme, engaging in severe ascetic practices such as fasting and relying on the five fires, causes physical suffering, which leads to mental distraction. Because only in a state of happiness or equanimity can the mind be calmed, otherwise it is not possible. Holding one's own view as supreme, clinging to the belief that "only this is true, others are meaningless," and not properly contemplating on permanence, bliss, self, etc., one analyzes the knowable, causing the mind that has entered into samadhi to be distracted from knowing things as they truly are. The obscurations are the five, such as desire and longing. Why are they called obscurations? Because they obstruct the path to virtue, causing one not to contemplate on virtue, therefore they are called obscurations. Among them, desire and longing cause obstacles when one is delighted in renunciation, because one desires to be close to objects of desire, and therefore one is not delighted in renunciation. Harmful thoughts cause obstacles when one is exhorted, because when one exhorts those who practice pure conduct to truly practice the precepts, harmful thoughts cause one not to learn diligently. Dullness and sleep cause the mind to shrink inward when one meditates on the reasons for calm abiding. Excitement and regret occur when one meditates on the reasons for superiority, because at that time they cause distraction. Doubt occurs in a state of equanimity, because when one is not certain, one cannot abide in equanimity. As it is said: "Desire is an obscuration, incompatible, because of the same food and activity. Two and one aggregates are harmful, doubt is the cause, indeed it is five." One should understand it as such. Latent tendencies are greed and so on. Why are they called latent tendencies? Because they have been habituated in previous lives, so now one will indulge even more in the similar results of greed and so on.

Because illusions cannot subdue the mind, cannot compel good deeds, and are difficult to separate with antidotes, they are called "obscurations." Why are the essence of afflictions such as desire called "defilements"? Because relying on them, one becomes more indulgent in immoral conduct such as killing. Therefore, knowledgeable friends would say that this elder engages in such evil conduct, his bodily and verbal actions are in accordance with this, he is stained with the defilement of immoral conduct, is very impure, and causes others to lose trust, being a thorn in the village, therefore they are called "defilements." The essence of sin is the three afflictions such as desire. Why are they called "sins"? Because relying on them, one experiences the suffering of birth and death in samsara for a long time, thereby causing harm, so they are called "sins." Thorns are the three afflictions such as desire. Why are they called "thorns"? Because relying on them, one is harmed by engaging in craving and doubt towards existence and the objects of existence, as well as the Three Jewels such as the Buddha and the truths, so they are called "thorns." The essence of "everything" is also afflictions such as desire. Why is it called "everything"? Because relying on them, one clings to possessing many things, making "everything" one's own, and associating with fear and so on, so they are "everything." The essence of misconduct is also afflictions such as desire. Why is it called "misconduct"? Because relying on them, one engages in misconduct through the three doors of body and so on, therefore they are called "misconduct." Furthermore, these three poisons are also established as the root of misconduct, because beings engage in misconduct through them. Therefore, due to insignificant bad things, those who seek enjoyment engage in misconduct due to attachment. Because the root of harmful actions lies in delusion, those who cannot tolerate the faults of others engage in misconduct due to hatred. Those who believe that liberation can be attained by making sacrifices with life, clearly
