It is for this reason. The third is jealousy and miserliness. If one possesses these, one will be unable to bear the perfections of others and oneself, and will repeatedly disturb the mind through the gate of universal clinging. It is for this reason. Fourth, at the time of pure discipline, the two, shamelessness and lack of embarrassment, will create obstacles. If one possesses these, one will not avoid the place of falling in all aspects. It is for this reason. The rivers established from the perspective of universal afflictions and conforming afflictions are four, namely: Thus, the afflictions of desire that have abandoned views and ignorance, and the near afflictions, etc., are the rivers of desire. The afflictions of the higher realms that have abandoned the two are the rivers of existence. The views of the three realms, etc., and ignorance, etc., are, in order, the rivers of views and ignorance. Why are they called rivers? Because they carry the continuum of samsara and the lower realms to one side. How do they carry? Those who enter into seeking desire are carried by the river of desire to one side of the continuum, and those who enter into seeking existence are carried by the second to one side of the continuum of samsara. Those who seek pure conduct through wrong paths are carried by the last two, namely, the way in which views exist and ignorance exists are related. If one is not deluded, one will not discriminate between liberation and its wrong path. The bonds established from the perspective of cutting off purification are also four, and they are the same. Because the antidote has the function of cutting off attachment from the non-concordant side, it is called a bond. The reason for becoming four bonds is that those four are also, and they are connected as before. The nature of clinging is the four, such as clinging to desire. The reason for establishing it there is that it is the root of the dispute between householders and renunciants, and from the dispute, karma will also increase. Therefore, it is also clinging to existence, so it is called clinging, etc. What is the cause of what dispute? Forms, sounds, etc., the qualities of desire, such as desire and attachment, etc., are the clinging to desire, and for that reason, householders dispute with each other.

In this context, attachment and desire refer to being exceedingly pleased with one's own possessions. To fully grasp this, it means being particularly infatuated. Because one desires not to be separated from it, it is a form of bondage. Because one delights in what others possess, it is complete infatuation. Because one is entirely attached to it, it is universal craving. Alternatively, in sequence: small attachment, medium attachment, large attachment, very large attachment, and extremely large attachment. Or, each preceding one is explained by each succeeding one. Due to attachment to the five views, etc., renunciants, both internal and external, argue with each other, and the root of that argument is the latter three acquisitions. Desire and attachment to the sixty-two views is the acquisition of views. Desire and attachment to the asceticism and severe austerities that follow each view, and to the various different behaviors, is the acquisition of ethics and asceticism. 'Mostly' means that most non-Buddhists rely on tiring and exhausting asceticism, but there are also some who do not rely on such asceticism. Desire for and attachment to the view of the perishable aggregate, which is the source from which the sixty-two views and ethics and asceticism arise, is the acquisition of the belief in self. Therefore, due to the acquisition of views, ethics, and asceticism, non-Buddhists argue with each other, because their minds have become diverse. Due to the acquisition of the belief in self, they do not argue, because all agree on the existence of self. Due to this acquisition, non-Buddhists and Buddhists argue, because their views on the existence and non-existence of self are different. The summary of the meaning is: 'Thus,' and so on. The nature of reverence is covetousness, the knots of the body, and so on, are four. Why is it called a knot? Because they are not knots of the physical body, but knots that cut off the mind's nature of equanimity, between the mind and the body. How do these four cut off the body of the mind? Because relying on covetousness, due to attachment to a small amount of bad things, such as food, clothing, etc., the first cannot arise completely, therefore one does not obtain samadhi.
