Conceit is called pride, although it measures as it is, it is because it has the form of conceit. Holding oneself to be superior to those who are equal in lineage, etc., is great pride. Even among those who possess virtues such as lineage that are superior to oneself, to be conceited in thinking that one is superior is pride beyond pride. To be conceited through viewing the aggregates of appropriation as self and belonging to self is the pride of "I am." To be conceited in thinking that one has attained the virtues to be attained, such as the four fruits, meditative absorption, and supernormal powers, even though one has not attained them, is the pride of false attainment. To think that one is slightly inferior to those who are exceedingly distinguished in virtue is also the pride of slightness, because one does not perceive the difference as it is, or because one is conceited in thinking that even though one is inferior in the assembly of the excellent, one is far ahead of others. To be conceited in thinking that one possesses virtues when one possesses non-virtues, such as immoral conduct, is perverse pride. How does it connect? If one has pride, one does not abandon it because one does not fully understand the faults of clinging to self and what belongs to self, and one engages in non-virtuous actions, etc., through these. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. What does it connect through? It connects through ignorance of the three realms. How does it connect? Because one does not understand suffering and the arising of suffering as things to be known and abandoned, one becomes especially attached to them. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. What does it connect through? It connects through the three, such as the view of the aggregates as a real self. How does it connect? With the view of the aggregates as a real self, one thinks, "I am liberated, I will be liberated," and thus seeks a means of escape through wrong views. With the extreme view, one clings to the idea that even after liberation, one will be either permanent or annihilated. With the wrong view, one thinks, "There is no liberation in becoming a Buddha; meditating on the self is the path to liberation," and thus clings to a means of escape through wrong views. What does it connect to? It connects to suffering. What does it connect through? It connects through the three, such as holding views as supreme. How does it connect? Through these, abandoning the eightfold noble path, in the manner of the view of the aggregates as a real self, etc., and what precedes it.

Because of believing that sins can be purified through laws and asceticism, one clings to the path that inevitably leads to wrong views. What is bound is suffering and face. The reason for binding is doubting whether the Four Noble Truths are knowable, etc. How does it bind? As it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Uncreated and spontaneously accomplished, not realized by other causes, possessing knowledge, love, and power, the Buddha possessing two benefits." Thus, one doubts whether the Buddha Jewel, possessing eight qualities, is the chief of the two-legged ones. And as: "Without thought, without duality, without discrimination, the nature of purity, clarity, and antidote, that which is free from desire by what, the nature of the two truths is Dharma." Thus, one doubts whether the Dharma Jewel, possessing eight qualities, is the chief of those free from desire. And as: "In all that exists and all that is, because of pure wisdom and vision, the assembly of the wise who do not turn back, possessing unsurpassed qualities." Thus, one doubts whether the Sangha Jewel, possessing such qualities, is the chief of the assembly. Thus, because of doubt, one does not take refuge in the Buddha, etc. Regarding the Dharma, because one is uncertain whether it is the true fruit, the path, and their elucidators, etc., one does not engage in hearing and contemplation, etc. Regarding the Sangha, because one is uncertain whether one has truly entered, one does not engage in service and reverence, etc. Therefore, one will not practice well. What is bound is suffering and face. The reason for binding is jealousy. How does it bind? Because one cherishes worldly perfections such as gain and respect, but does not cherish pure Dharma. What is bound is suffering and face. The reason for binding is stinginess. How does it bind? One feels pain at the lack of food, wealth, and other resources, and does not cherish the lack, but cherishes abundance and beauty, etc. What is bound is suffering and face. What is the binding? It is the three, such as desire. The three, such as pride, are included in ignorance. So, what does it bind? It is the binding of desire.
