Therefore, as it is said, these three (pleasant feeling, painful feeling, and neutral feeling) arise sequentially from the three feelings with a basis. Why is it called bondage? Because relying on attachment and so on, when engaging in the virtues of hearing, thinking, and meditating, one cannot act as desired. For example, just as being bound by iron chains prevents one from walking as one wishes. The classification of latent predispositions is seven, such as the latent predisposition of attachment to desire. Why are latent predispositions of attachment divided into two? Because they grow separately for seeking desire and seeking existence. Why is the attachment of the two upper realms considered as one? Because both are equally attached to the aggregates that are the inner appropriation. The unfortunate state that is in accordance with the afflictions is the seed of that particular affliction. The seeds of the afflicted are also called latent predispositions and are also called unfortunate states. The seeds of wholesome contaminated and non-obscured and unspecified are called habitual tendencies and seeds, and are not called latent predispositions or unfortunate states. By what do these grow? In this regard, if one does not abandon seeking desire with antidotes, the latent predispositions of attachment and anger towards the qualities of desirable things such as forms and sounds will grow, because these two afflictions grow from the craving for desire. If one does not abandon seeking existence with antidotes, the latent predisposition of attachment to the aggregates of existence as appropriation will grow. If one does not abandon wrong conduct of pure conduct with antidotes, pride and so on will grow, like this, those people, even if they are satisfied with only a small worldly path, the latent predisposition of pride will grow, and because they are ignorant of the true reality, ignorance, and liberation through wrong paths such as eternal self, and followers of wrong views, etc., understand the means of liberation through wrong paths, therefore, view, and towards the Buddha's teachings, the sacred Dharma and Vinaya, which are the essence of scripture and realization, doubt arises as to whether liberation and the means of liberation are correct or not, etc., because it devours (wholesome roots), the latent predisposition of doubt will grow.

There are two types of afflictions: gross afflictions. These are established as any afflictions such as desire, because they cause the mind to be closely afflicted through many doors. Other than desire and the like, those that belong to the mental formations aggregate, such as anger and other afflictions, are not afflictions because they do not have the characteristic of making the mind extremely unpeaceful through many doors. However, they are near afflictions because they cause the mind to be closely afflicted through each and every way. Regarding the establishment in the three times: again, the three, such as desire, are near afflictions, because when they cause the mind to be closely afflicted, one will not be separated from desire by the path of seeing, nor will one be liberated by the path of meditation, because the obscurations that obscure them have not been abandoned. Quoting the scriptural authority of its intention is by the Blessed One and so forth. The all-entangling ones are the eight, such as torpor. Why? Why are they called all-entangling? Because when engaging in virtuous activities, they repeatedly and mostly entangle the mind. Among these, virtuous activities are the four, such as meditating on the causes of calm abiding. Among these, meditating on the causes of calm abiding is: when the mind is agitated or suspected of being agitated, at that time, contemplating the faults of samsara and other things that cause aversion. Meditating on the causes of superior seeing is: when the mind is inwardly dull, contemplating the qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and other things that cause joy. Meditating on the causes of equanimity is: when entering the union of calm abiding and superior seeing, the mind does not manifestly cling to either the favorable or unfavorable side, but remains in a state of equanimity. The basis of these three is discipline, because householders have great distraction and therefore cannot practice calm abiding and superior seeing. What is obscured by what? For the first virtuous activity, sleep and torpor are obstacles, because they cause the mind to be inwardly subdued. The second is agitation and regret, because they cause the mind to be outwardly distracted.
