The third causes suffering that transforms. Seeking pure conduct in a wrong way causes the manifest accomplishment of the suffering of formations up to the fourth dhyana. Furthermore, seeking existence causes the accomplishment of suffering in the form and formless realms. Seeking pure conduct in a wrong way causes one to be enslaved there because one is not completely liberated from samsara. Going in all ways is because craving for arising and ceasing has the aspects of permanence and annihilation. Craving is the main reason, and there are other reasons as well. Desire and attachment being shown as appropriation have already been extensively explained. In the extensive explanation, among the two origins of afflictions and karma, first, regarding afflictions, the brief explanation is: What are afflictions? and so on. That is, the objects to be known, the afflictions, are determined by ten aspects such as the meaning and number to be known. Among the ten aspects of the extensive explanation, first, the number: divided into five views, and the distinction of undivided, there are six or ten. Among them, the six afflictions are: for the three of enjoyable pleasure, suffering, and equanimity, engaging in a perverse manner, in order, are desire, anger, and ignorance. Engaging in a perverse manner towards the eating sentient being is pride, and establishing in a perverse manner what is correctly ascertained as non-perverse is view and doubt, that is, determining in a perverse manner and not determining. These six afflictions can also become ten due to the distinctions of the five views such as the view of the aggregates of destruction. Regarding characteristics, the individual characteristics have been explained, and when any dharma arises, it arises with the characteristic of making the mind extremely uneasy, which is the general characteristic of afflictions. How does it make the mind extremely uneasy? It does so through six ways: uneasiness through distraction, uneasiness through perversion, uneasiness through excitement, uneasiness through drowsiness, uneasiness through carelessness, and uneasiness through shamelessness. Among them, afflictions such as desire cause the mind to be distracted by desirable qualities, therefore it is uneasiness through distraction. For the perversions such as permanence and bliss,

Because the mind clings to the impermanent state, the inverted cannot be completely pacified. Because the mind is distracted to the realm of suffering, agitation cannot be completely pacified. Because the mind is not clear inside, dullness cannot be completely pacified. Because the mind does not protect the defiled dharmas and is indulgent, negligence cannot be completely pacified. Because one does not take non-virtuous dharmas seriously, shamelessness cannot be completely pacified. What are the causes and conditions for the arising of afflictions? The habitual tendencies of afflictions, the causal condition that has not been completely abandoned by the path beyond the world; and the objective condition of the dharmas of the abode of afflictions such as desire, the appearance of the lovely and unlovely aspects; and the inappropriate attention that clings to the lovely or unlovely aspects of that object, abiding closely, from which afflictions arise. Regarding the object, all afflictions such as desire become the object of all afflictions. The bases from which afflictions arise are also their objects. Except for the three afflictions such as ignorance, the other afflictions that operate in the desire realm do not focus on the afflictions of the higher grounds such as the first dhyana. For example, desire does not focus, because rejoicing in the dharmas of the higher grounds is faith that arises from the desire for virtuous dharmas, because there are no afflictions, and because it does not cause harm, anger will not arise. Because there is no self-grasping towards the formations of other grounds, it is also not pride. Ignorance and views, and doubt, although they also focus on the higher grounds, they do not focus manifestly as they do on their own ground, because they enter through the way of conceptual imputation. Therefore, one should understand that the object of focus is distinguished and established. Among them, the ignorance that focuses on the higher grounds is associated with views. Views are other than the view of the aggregates, because it is not seen that there is manifest clinging to the formations of other grounds as "I." What are the other views? It is the creator Brahma.
