The end of everything is characterized by decay and diminution. As it is said in the "Friendly Epistle": "Even having become a universal monarch, in samsara, one will again become a servant." The nature of the destruction and formation of the vessel world has already been explained in detail. When destroyed by the three, such as fire, in order, the three, such as the second dhyana, remain. The three, such as famine, bring the abiding intermediate kalpas to an end and completion. One decrease is from the immeasurable life span decreasing until it reaches a life span of ten years, which is the first intermediate kalpa of the abiding kalpa. One increase is up to eighty thousand years, and one decrease is down to a life span of ten years. Eighteen such cycles are the kalpas that occur during the abiding period. One increase is from a life span of ten years increasing to eighty thousand years, which is the last of the intermediate kalpas of the abiding period. The method of counting kalpas, that is something that came along incidentally, and that has already been explained. So, do those sentient beings, in that great kalpa spoken of as their own life span, not die before the number of kalpas is exhausted? It is not so. When life, merit, and karma are exhausted, even if their respective life spans are not exhausted, they will die and transmigrate from that place. Among these, the exhaustion of life is because the life that one's previous karma has extended is completely exhausted, and one dies because the time of death has arrived. The exhaustion of merit is when, even if life or its extension is not exhausted, due to some sudden circumstance, the power of having exhausted the karma of merit that would sustain life causes one to die even though the time of death has not arrived. For example, those sentient beings born in the form and formless realms sustain themselves by experiencing the taste of the innate samadhi of their own continuum, and when the karma of merit is exhausted, they will die even before the time has come. The exhaustion of karma is when, having been born in that place, or having exhausted the karma to be experienced in other instances, or because there is no karma, one dies, and it should be understood that one will not be born in that place for a while. Second, the characteristic of suffering is the suffering of suffering.

The suffering itself and the other three, and the eight aspects such as the suffering of fear, have already been explained in detail. If the aspects of suffering are determined to be three or eight, then why does the sutra say that whatever is impermanent is suffering? Because impermanence itself arises from what was previously non-existent, it also belongs to the category of birth, and because it disappears after arising, it also belongs to the category of destruction. Relying on the first impermanence, one can fully understand the suffering of suffering, because the feeling of suffering with a place is suffering from the very beginning of its arising. Relying on the second impermanence, one can thoroughly understand the suffering of change, because the feeling of happiness with a place becomes suffering when it is destroyed. Relying on impermanence that belongs to both cases, one can thoroughly understand the suffering of conditioning, because the nature of the suffering of conditioning, the five aggregates of clinging, becomes suffering both at the beginning of birth and at the end of destruction. Therefore, it is precisely because impermanence can clearly reveal the three sufferings that it is said that whatever is impermanent is suffering. It is precisely because impermanence can clearly reveal the three sufferings, and considering this, the Blessed One said that I consider the conditioned phenomena of the side of equanimity to be impermanent, and the conditioned phenomena of the side of happiness to produce suffering when they change, so whatever contaminated feeling is felt, this is called suffering here. Whatever is felt refers to taking the two feelings of happiness and equanimity, while the feeling of suffering, because it is called suffering in the world, there is no need to examine the idea of considering it as suffering. Another idea of impermanence being said to be suffering is that the birth of the characteristic of the manifestation of the senses, and the destruction of the cessation of the senses are connected, for the inner phenomena, birth is suffering and the other eight sufferings manifest, therefore, only considering this, it is said that impermanence is suffering, impermanence is
