Now, what is the general characteristic of suffering? Like this and so on has been said. This should also be understood by means of two aspects: distinction and the individual essence. The first is the four, such as impermanence. Why are impermanence and so on shown only as characteristics of suffering? Because children are attached to the aggregates of suffering with the perverted views of permanence, happiness, purity, and self. In order to counteract these four perversions, the four, such as impermanence, are shown as characteristics of suffering. Among them, the antidote to permanence is impermanence, and the antidote to purity and happiness is one aspect of suffering, because purity and happiness enter into a pleasant aspect, while suffering is the opposite of that, entering into a repulsive aspect. The antidote to the clinging to self is emptiness and selflessness, because some people cling to the aggregates themselves as the nature of self, while others think that there is a self of a different entity on the aggregates, therefore two are shown. As it is said in the *Distinguishing the Provisional and the Definitive*: 'Why should the truth of suffering be viewed with four aspects?' The answer is: 'To counteract the four perversions. Among them, one aspect is the antidote to one perversion, one aspect is the antidote to two perversions, and the last two aspects are the antidote to one perversion.' Just as it was said. Secondly, the individual essence, among the four, for the time being, the characteristic of impermanence is that with twelve characteristics, it is considered that impermanence is shown as the truth of suffering, therefore it is said what is the characteristic of non-existence and so on. Among them, the characteristic of non-existence is that the nature of the truth of suffering, for the aggregates and so on, the entity and the self and what belongs to the self that have become different entities, do not exist at any time, that should be regarded as the nature of the impermanence of the truth of suffering, because the word "non" is a negative meaning, and the word "permanent" means all the time. The characteristic of destruction is that all conditioned things arise and eventually completely perish and disappear. Change is all

Actions will change differently in different situations. Separation is: the enjoyer of inner and outer phenomena himself, or others such as wives and concubines who are enjoyed, lacking the ability to enjoy due to the power of aging, or losing control due to being unsuitable for enjoyment; even if this is not the case, one's own objects of enjoyment are possessed by others, and one cannot enjoy them oneself. Nearness is: all phenomena, from the moment they arise, are oppressed by the impermanence of instantaneous destruction. Nature is: impermanence inevitably occurs in phenomena, which is related to its own cause, meaning that impermanence arises from its own cause. An instant is, as stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: "The time traversed by a single atom, the ultimate time is also considered an instant." It is like the moment when a single atom moves up and down. When inner and outer phenomena arise, they only exist for that instant with the characteristics described above, and do not exist for more than two instants. The characteristic of continuity is: from beginningless time, inner and outer phenomena arise continuously from their respective previous causes, without interruption. The characteristics of aging, etc., are: imbalance of the elements, becoming bald, and the interruption of the continuation of the time of existence. The various manifestations of mind are: sometimes being in a state of disharmony with attachment, etc., and sometimes being in a state of antidotes such as being free from attachment, etc., the mind arises in various ways. Gathering is within. Distraction is outside. Sinking is: dull and unclear. Focusing is: directing the mind to things that are pleasing or displeasing. Being happy when playing, etc., before, and not being happy when separated from it, not being near peace is being disturbed by afflictions and near afflictions. Being near peace is being separated from these. Meditating on the union of calm abiding and insight in equipoise. The opposite of this is not being in equipoise. Etc. includes: extremely cultivating the mind, and liberation and non-liberation, etc. The worldly body and the perfection of enjoyment.
