It is said that only the wisdom fully grasped by the compassion of Bodhisattvas, etc., is named "ground" because it has become the basis of qualities. That very wisdom, in the subsequent attainment, is distinctly established as the ten grounds, such as the Joyful Ground, due to the differences in how it leads to different understandings of the sphere of reality, and the distinctions in the number of qualities and the differences in births, etc. The extensive elaborations of these should be understood in other treatises. Third, those who act with characteristics abide in the six grounds, such as the Joyful Ground, because in those grounds, they are mixed with characteristics even though they do not wish to be. Among them, the Joyful Ground, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "Being close to enlightenment, and seeing the accomplishment of the benefit of beings, joy arises, therefore it is called the Joyful Ground." The Stainless Ground is: "Because it is free from the defilement of composing immoral conduct, it is called the Stainless Ground." The Luminous Ground is: "Because it causes the great appearance of the Dharma, it is called the Luminous Ground." That is, by the power of samadhi, it seeks immeasurable Dharmas and also shows them to others. The Radiant Ground is: "Thus, the Dharma that is in accordance with enlightenment, is like light that thoroughly burns. Therefore, that ground, possessing that, is radiant with the light that burns both." That is, because that wisdom burns the afflictive obscurations. The Difficult to Overcome Ground is: "It fully ripens all sentient beings, and also protects one's own mind, it is difficult to tame by the wise, therefore it is called the Difficult to Overcome Ground." This means that although one strives to ripen sentient beings, due to their inverted actions, one's own mind is defiled by afflictions, therefore it is difficult for others to do. The Manifest Ground is: "Relying on the Perfection of Wisdom, samsara and nirvana, these two are manifestly realized, therefore it is called the Manifest Ground." That is, not abiding in existence or peace, but manifesting these. Fourth, acting without characteristics is the seventh ground, because there, one can control so that no characteristics arise for as long as one desires. The Gone Afar Ground is: "Because it is connected with the one path of going, it is considered the Gone Afar Ground." That is, it is connected with the immovable ground from which one does not turn back.

It is for the sake of liberation. Fifth, abiding in non-manifestation refers to the three pure grounds, because there one can attain non-conceptual wisdom arising from maturation. The Immovable Ground is so-called because of the immovability of the two cognitions. It is desired in the Immovable Ground because it is free from the effort of non-retrogression and the two cognitions of striving for the signless. The Ground of Good Intelligence is: Each is a truly excellent lineage, that ground is the Ground of Good Intelligence. Thus it is said. The Cloud of Dharma is: Like clouds, the two pervade the Dharma of space, hence it is called the Cloud of Dharma. It is said that the Dharma obtained by the clouds of samadhi and dharani exists in the support and pervades the space-like place. Third, examining the Stream-Enterer, there are two types of Stream-Enterers: the gradual one is as previously explained, because the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the three realms are gradually abandoned by ground and type. The instantaneous Stream-Enterer refers to the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the three realms being abandoned all at once. How are they abandoned by type? It refers to the afflictions to be abandoned by cultivation in the desire and form realms, from the greatest to the smallest, being abandoned all at once. Why are they abandoned in this way? Because this person gathers all the aggregates such as form in the three realms together and contemplates that all of this is impermanent, suffering, empty, selfless, etc., rather than observing the types of calmness and intensity above and below like the gradual one, or separating the sufferings of the three realms and contemplating them separately. Here, the scripture is from the Sutra of the Fingertip: Whatever form it may be, from that to consciousness, past, future, and present, from the vast to the distant and near, all of that is gathered together and made into one part. What appears now, from the vast to the distant and near, all of that is gathered together and made into one part. It becomes a circle, becomes a collection, becomes an aggregate, becomes one part, and after becoming one aggregate, one truly learns in this way that all of this is impermanent, all of this is suffering, etc., which is widely proclaimed.
