Here, alternatingly meditating on the fourth dhyana, having tasted the flavor of the first, one regresses from the second dhyana upwards, and is born in the Brahma realm in the next life. There, relying on the power of previous meditation, one meditates by alternating the fourth dhyana. Below that, one is born in Akanistha and attains nirvana. The second case is similar to the former, but from the Brahma realm one is born in any of the lower Pure Abodes, and then attains nirvana. The third case is as described in the sutra. Reaching the end of Existence means that some who ascend upwards, having meditated on the fourth dhyana alternately, only utilize the Pure Abodes, and gradually proceed from the Brahma realm to the peak of Existence, where they do not attain the end of suffering. How does alternating meditation on the fourth dhyana lead to birth in the Pure Abodes? By fully meditating on the fourth dhyana alternately, in small and other ways, one is born in the five Pure Abodes in sequence. Among them, meditating in a small way means entering into the fourth dhyana's uncontaminated samadhi, then entering into the contaminated samadhi, and then entering into the uncontaminated samadhi, alternating these three. In this way, alternating six times, nine times, twelve times, and fifteen times should be understood as medium and so on. The Vaibhashikas say that it is accomplished when one can alternate between contaminated and uncontaminated moments of mind. Here, it is considered accomplished when the stream of contaminated and uncontaminated mind is continuous and one can enter samadhi at will. That is, when one conjunction manifests three contaminated and uncontaminated minds, it is considered that small has been accomplished. When one conjunction manifests fifteen minds, it is considered that very great has been accomplished, and so on, it should be understood. What is not mentioned in this sutra, "Others go to the four formless realms," refers to the four types of non-returners who go to the formless realms, such as those who attain nirvana after birth. There is no distinction of surpassing three in the upward transfer here, because this is the practice of calm abiding, so one cannot alternate insight. There is also no nirvana in the intermediate state, because there is no intermediate state for those born in the formless realm. "Others attain nirvana from here," refers to the pacification of the Dharma in sight, which is the non-returner who attains nirvana at the very moment of obtaining the fruit. What is the intention of not mentioning these two cases in this sutra?

Unknown. Fourth, there are six distinctions of Arhats: Arhats who have the nature of completely falling away, who have the nature of self-killing, who have the nature of being protected, who have the nature of not arising from a place, who have the nature of being worthy of thought, and who have the nature of being immovable. The first five are those who proceed with faith as foremost, and the latter is one who proceeds with attainment by sight as foremost. Moreover, the first five are those who manifest liberation of mind, and because they depend on the arising of samadhi and the availability of suitable equipment, freedom from illness, and the perfection of a special place, they are called liberation with time and conjunction. The latter is one who manifests samadhi at will, so manifesting their liberation of mind is called liberation without time and conjunction. Alternatively, from the perspective of being able to completely fall away and not being able to completely fall away, in order to be liberated at other times and forever, they are, in order, liberation with time and liberation without time. Complete falling away, although the Vaibhashikas believe it is falling away from the fruit, here it is falling away only from the samadhi of abiding in comfort in the present dharma, but not from the fruit, because the abandonment by the noble ones is a good abandonment, so they will not return. Otherwise, faith in liberation would be lost forever. Among them, the first is a dull faculty person who, previously in the state of the path of learning, does not possess the two applications, is seduced by the faults of desirable qualities, and whether intoxicated or not, whether committing suicide or not, will fall away from the samadhi of abiding in comfort in the present dharma. The second is similar to the previous one, but if one cuts off one's own life and kills oneself, one will not fall away. The third is one who previously possessed constant application, protects the mind from desirable qualities, and if not seduced by them, will not fall away. The fourth is one who previously possessed respectful application, and whether seduced by desirable qualities or not, will not fall away, but cannot fully subdue the sharp faculties of faith, etc. The fifth is one who previously possessed both applications, and whether seduced or not, will not fall away, and is able to fully subdue dull faculties into sharp faculties. The sixth is one who previously had both applications
