Therefore, it is because of the power generated by the karma that will experience existence in that life. Therefore, this only manifests the remaining three fruits in the seventh life, and not before that. If there are other ordinary beings whose continuums are fully matured and who have entered the stream, they may also have excellent attainments, but they are not certain to take seven lives, so they are not called 'seven-time existences.' Here, whoever definitely takes seven lives, that is, this general name is applied to the specific, and if it is attained as desired, it is called 'attaining seven times as desired.' Secondly, 'born from lineage to lineage' means that one has abandoned the third or fourth category of afflictions of the desire realm, which are to be abandoned by distinction, and has also obtained the uncontaminated faculty as their antidote. Among those who desire the distinction of birth, from gods to gods or from humans to humans, one has gone from lineage to lineage two or three times, and has not attained the end of suffering in the second or third time. Why is the fifth category not abandoned? If that is abandoned, then the sixth category will inevitably be abandoned as well, and therefore one will become a 'returner.' That is also of two types: being born from lineage to lineage among gods, and being born from lineage to lineage among humans. The first is to revolve two or three times in the desire realm gods and attain nirvana. The second is to revolve two or three times among humans and attain nirvana. These, 'born from lineage to lineage' and 'attaining seven times as desired,' are established at the time of attaining the fruit of stream-entry, and not after that, because there is no distinction of birth. 'Born from lineage to lineage' abides on the path of a distinguished fruit, but it is not entering the fruit of a 'returner,' because it is possible to transfer to another vehicle. Therefore, it is a mistake that the commentary says that both this and 'one interval' enter the later fruit. Secondly, the distinction of a 'returner,' 'one interval,' means that a 'returner' has abandoned the seventh or eighth category of afflictions of the desire realm, but does not abandon the ninth category in that life, and in the next life has not attained the end of suffering among the gods of the desire realm. Thirdly, among the five distinctions of a 'non-returner,' the first, 'attaining complete nirvana in the intermediate state,' means that a 'non-returner' who has a basis in the desire realm, manifestly goes to the existence of form

Having exhausted the power of afflictions, having abandoned the predispositions for arising, and after death, the latent tendencies of merely accomplishing the intermediate state are not exhausted, and the predispositions for manifest accomplishment are not abandoned, therefore, by its power, when the intermediate state of form is manifestly accomplished, one makes the path manifest and does not attain the limit of suffering. There are three aspects to this. For example, just as a morning spark dies as soon as it rises, one enters nirvana without remainder as soon as the intermediate state is manifestly accomplished; like a hot iron spark dying as it rises, one does not think of going to rebirth after the intermediate state is manifestly accomplished, one makes the path manifest in the middle of life and does not attain the limit of suffering; and like a hot spark dying just before it falls to the ground, one manifestly thinks of entering rebirth, and just before rebirth is attained, one makes the path manifest and does not attain the limit of suffering. These are entering nirvana without remainder, because the existence of the intermediate state is of a nature that seeks rebirth, so when one is separated from the desire for rebirth, then that body will be destroyed. Therefore, when all afflictions are abandoned, one is separated from the desire for rebirth, so that body will cease. It is easy to enter nirvana after birth, and without manifest action, it is because of the power of previous extreme habituation, the path arises by itself, and with manifest action, it is the opposite of that, these three are easy. These are entering nirvana with remainder when afflictions are abandoned, because one does not die as long as the force of life is not exhausted, so it is not without remainder. Fifth, moving upwards, upwards refers to Akanistha and the Peak of Existence, which are respectively the limit of the form realm and the limit of the complete exhaustion of samsara. Moving is to gradually go to that place. There are two types of this. Going to the limit of Akanistha is because of enjoying much flavor, for those who are born in the first dhyana small and so on, having enjoyed the flavor, starting from the Brahma host, one is born once from place to place in the form realm and enters Akanistha, and does not attain the limit of suffering. Or, as it says in the Abhidharmakosha, "There, increasing, half-increasing, everywhere, death." That is, increasing, half-increasing, and dying in all places, three types. The first is this
