If someone abandons the sixth [level of affliction] and is mostly free from attachment to desire, then later, having entered the right path, they will become a Once-Returner at the sixteenth [level]. Calling this a 'Once-Returner who has previously abandoned attachment' is a delusion of those who are not skilled in the terminology of detachment. For as long as the ninth affliction of desire has not been abandoned, the name 'free from attachment' cannot be applied. Therefore, this should be called a 'Transcending Returner,' because they are a Once-Returner but have not previously attained the fruit of Stream-Entry. If someone abandons the ninth [level of affliction] and is free from attachment to desire, then having entered the right path, they will abide in the fruit of Non-Return at the sixteenth [level]. This is both a 'Previously Detached' and a 'Transcending Non-Returner,' because they are a Non-Returner but have not previously attained the fruit of Once-Returning. Although a Stream-Enterer abandons all that is to be abandoned by seeing, the sutras say that one is called a Stream-Enterer by abandoning the three fetters, because these three are obstacles to attaining liberation and are the main objects to be abandoned by a Stream-Enterer. Why? Because holding to the view of a self in the aggregates leads to clinging to the five aggregates as self and what belongs to self, thereby delighting in samsara and not being able to escape from suffering. Even if one does escape, by holding to moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, one clings to the wrong path, thus giving rise to wrong views. Doubt, on the other hand, causes hesitation about the good path, and therefore is not a cause for truly escaping. Alternatively, the view of a self is the cause of wrongly understanding what is to be known, because it imputes self and what belongs to self to what is merely suffering. Holding to moral discipline and asceticism as supreme is the cause of wrongly understanding views, because one believes that it brings purification. Doubt is the cause of wrongly understanding the antidote, because one does not have certainty in the Three Jewels. Second, regarding the entering and abiding of a Once-Returner, entering refers to: at the end of the path of seeing, on the path of meditation, the individual who has abandoned the fifth affliction of desire and abides on the path of application and the path of no obstruction, abandoning the sixth affliction. Why is it that only one who abides on the path of abandoning the sixth [affliction] is an enterer into Once-Returning? Because it is by abandoning a certain aspect of affliction that the fruit of Once-Returning is manifested.

If it is said that entering the abandonment of the sixth level is called entering the fruit of Once-Returner, that is because it is not reasonable for anything other than the sixth level. Similarly, the third and fourth levels should also be understood. The Kashmiris say: "Because of the difference between the attainment of the fruit and the fruit itself, there is no attainment of the path. In order to differentiate the abiding in the fruit, not striving is not entering." Therefore, when one strives on the path in order to attain a special later fruit, that is when one enters the later fruit. Here, it is not enough to simply enter the later fruit, because in those times, it is possible to enter another vehicle due to the power of conditions, and the later fruit will not manifest. When one enters the practice of abandoning the form of affliction that will manifest that fruit by abandoning which form, the later fruit will inevitably manifest. Therefore, it is reasonable to enter the later fruit at that time. Abiding in the fruit of Once-Returner is from the time the entrant abides in the path of liberation from abandoning the six afflictions of the desire realm, up to the time of abiding in the uninterrupted path of the ninth level. Because most are free from desire, they abide in the fruit of the practice of a completely separated ascetic. Third, the two types of entering and abiding in the Non-Returner, entering refers to the Once-Returner abandoning the seventh and eighth afflictions of the desire realm, entering the practice of abandoning the ninth level and the uninterrupted path. Abiding in the fruit of Non-Returner is from the path of liberation from abandoning the ninth level up to the uninterrupted path of abandoning the ninth level of the peak of existence. Because the last five lower fetters have been abandoned, one abides in the fruit of the practice of a completely separated ascetic. Although the Non-Returner has abandoned all the cultivation abandonments of the desire realm, the sutras say that the Non-Returner is the one who has abandoned the last five lower fetters, because these five are the cause of the last existence and the last realm, so they are the main objects to be abandoned by the Non-Returner. Why? Because the view of the perishable aggregate, holding to precepts and vows, holding to views, and doubt are the cause of the last existence and the bad realms, while desire and anger are the cause of the last realm, the desire realm.
