By pacifying the causes of afflictions, one becomes a true practitioner. The sutra says that from "evil and unwholesome dharmas" to the detailed aging and death, various explanations have been made, hence it is called practice. The fruits of practice are twofold: conditioned and unconditioned. The first is included by the path of liberation, and the second is included by the cessation of individual analysis of what is to be abandoned. These are, in order, the homogenous cause and the personal result of practice. Due to the differences in stages, the sutra speaks of four fruits of practice, such as the fruit of stream-entry. Others say: The principle of practice is the undefiled path, and the fruits are conditioned and unconditioned. These are one hundred and nineteen each, including the path of liberation and cessation. Thus, the eight paths of liberation included in the path of seeing, and the eighty-one liberations included in the path of cultivation, these are conditioned dharmas. The abandonment of these afflictions is the unconditioned fruit of practice, thus there are eighty-nine. If so, why are they established as four fruits? The establishment of the four fruits is because the five causes exist. Regarding the fruit, abandoning the previous path, obtaining others, cessation and combination, obtaining eight kinds of knowledge, and obtaining sixteen aspects. As it is said, at any stage where the five causes exist, that itself is established as the fruit. Thus, abandoning the path of stream-entry, obtaining the path of fruition, obtaining one attainment of all abandonment, simultaneously obtaining eight kinds of subsequent knowledge of the Dharma, and obtaining sixteen aspects such as impermanence. So it is said. This needs to be explained in another way, thus, there are three things to be abandoned: the three pervasive bonds that become obstacles to entering liberation, the five lower fetters that become obstacles to transcending lower realms and lower spheres, and the five higher fetters that become obstacles to transcending higher realms. These are, in order, desiring liberation.

Their objects of abandonment are the coarse, the subtle, and the extremely subtle. Abandoning them also results in the small, medium, and large fruits that are actually sought. Among them, the first abandonment is the establishment of the fruit of stream-entry. The sutra says, 'This person, having abandoned the three bonds, is a stream-enterer.' The second is weakening and abandoning, which sequentially establishes the fruits of once-returner and non-returner. The sutra says, 'What is the fruit of once-returner? It is one who has abandoned the three bonds and weakened desire, hatred, and delusion. What is the fruit of non-returner? It is one who has abandoned the five bonds corresponding to the lower division.' Why is this said? Because the afflictions to be abandoned by the practice of conduct are the coarsest and are abandoned sequentially. Therefore, when most of the afflictions of the desire realm are exhausted, it is established as the fruit of once-returner; when completely exhausted, it is established as the fruit of non-returner. This is to show the faults of the desire realm and to show quick liberation from it. The third abandonment is the establishment of the fruit of Arhat. The sutra says, 'Abandoning the five bonds corresponding to the higher division is the fruit of Arhat.' Relying on what ground is it obtained? The first and second fruits rely solely on the initial proximity of the immediate path, because the afflictions of the desire realm have not been abandoned. The third fruit, if obtained sequentially, relies solely on the immediate path; if obtained by one who is free from desire, it relies on any actual practice of meditation. It does not rely on the formless realm, because that cannot serve as an antidote to the afflictions of the desire realm, and the non-returner is also distinguished by abandoning the afflictions of the desire realm. The fourth fruit relies on the six meditators and the first three formless realms. If it is to be obtained in the lower two realms, it relies on the six meditators; if it is obtained in the formless realm, it is obtained by relying on any of the first three formless realms. In what realm is it obtained? The Abhidharmakosha says:
