The earth element is equivalent to the space element, and eye consciousness is equivalent to the separate consciousness elements. By separating them in this way, the perception of roundness will be destroyed, and it will not become crowded. As an antidote to conceptual thought, one should practice mindfulness of breathing in and breathing out. The essence of these mindfulness practices is wisdom, and the earth is present in the first three proximity concentrations, the special concentrations, and the desire realm. It possesses only neutral feeling, and because it is in accordance with conceptual thought, it does not possess pleasure or pain. The fourth [dhyana] and above are not the ground of breathing in and breathing out, so they do not rely on proximity concentration. Its object is wind. The basis is only the basis of gods and humans in the desire realm. This is unique to the insiders, not the outsiders, because there is no scriptural authority, and one cannot directly realize the profound Dharma oneself. The method of practice is counting, following, settling, closely observing, transforming, and purifying. It is completely perfect when it possesses six causes. Among them, counting is: focusing the mind on breathing in and breathing out, without mental fabrication, relaxing the body and mind, and counting from one to ten with just mindfulness. Because of the fear of the mind being too constricted or distracted, it should not be too little or too much. There are three faults in this: if one grasps one as two, it is the fault of incomplete counting. If one grasps two as one, it is the fault of counting too much. If one grasps inhalation as exhalation, or exhalation as inhalation, it is the fault of confused counting. Other than that, it is correct counting. If the mind wanders in between, one should start counting from the beginning until one attains samadhi. Following is: all of these arise and enter in one direction, these pervade the whole body or move in one direction, without mental fabrication, following the rhythm of breathing in and breathing out. When it enters, it follows the order of the armpits, chest, navel, waist, thighs, and buttocks to between the two feet, and when it exits, it exits to a distance of one span or one fathom.
