Therefore, in order to elicit from all speech, it is thus established how to realize. With the three, such as right speech, the yogi himself purifies his view, etc., and makes others believe. Among these, with right speech, asking and instructing in accordance with realization, establishing clear words, the yogi's view is known to be completely purified. With the ultimate of right action, conduct in going, staying, sitting, and lying down is complete, and discipline is known to be completely purified. With right livelihood, seeking Dharma robes, etc., as permitted, one believes that life is completely purified. Effort is a limb for purifying the obscurations of afflictions, therefore it abandons all remaining defilements. Mindfulness is a limb for purifying the obscurations of near afflictions, therefore, with correct calm abiding, etc., one does not forget the signs, and the near afflictions, such as dullness and excitement, have no opportunity. Samadhi is a limb for purifying the obscurations on special qualities, therefore it can manifest and accomplish qualities such as clairvoyance. These are also as stated in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: "Complete cutting off and understanding, and the three make others believe. As an antidote to unfavorable factors, these are the eight limbs of the path." And so on. Companions and meditation are merely for understanding. The fruit is the complete cutting off of right view, etc., which has already been explained. The meaning of the four paths and the four abodes of Dharma should be understood as previously explained. There are three paths for accomplishing all qualities, the first of which is calm abiding, which pacifies the causes of distraction. These are the nine ways of abiding the mind. Among these, placing the mind internally means that the mind is withdrawn from external objects and does not wander outward, but is initially bound internally. Continuously placing the mind means that the gross movements of the mind are initially bound and continuously fixed on that. Replacing the mind means that if it wanders outward due to forgetfulness, it is again withdrawn and placed. Closely placing the mind means that in order to prevent the mind from scattering outward, it is initially with mindfulness.

To make it abide. To subdue means to regard the faults of forms, etc., which are the cause of distraction, and not to allow the mind to indulge in them from the very beginning. To pacify means to regard the faults of the disturbing afflictions and thoughts that disturb the mind, and not to allow them to take advantage. To completely pacify means that if, after forgetting, conceptualizations, etc., arise everywhere, not to accept them. To make one-pointed means to constantly moisten and place the samadhi without interruption by means of manifest effort. To place equally means that because of being very accustomed, without manifest effort, the stream of the mind's samadhi arises spontaneously without distraction. Also in the Ornament of the Sutras it says: "Having fixed the mind on the object, do not let that stream be distracted. Having quickly realized the distraction, then moisten it." Thus it is said. Vipashyana is to distinguish all the dharmas and objects of knowledge, such as "this person is the six elements," and to distinguish well the nature of what exists as it is, without inversion, and to completely distinguish the nature with discriminating wisdom and to completely determine the differences. The way these accomplish qualities is, as it says in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: "The vipashyana of the yogi, and after having meditated on calm abiding, are freed from the bonds of signs and likewise from the bonds of bad states." Just like that, vipashyana is the antidote to bad states, calm abiding is the antidote to the signs of the object, and both can liberate from inverted permanence, etc., and in order to place the mind in the correct reality as it is. The way these transform into four paths is, again, as it appears in the sutras, they transform into four paths: The first is that some people obtain the abiding of calm abiding, but not vipashyana, and that person relies on that which has been obtained until he is able to discriminate. The second is the opposite of that. The third is that a person who has not obtained both of these, for dharmas such as form and sound, does not pacify agitation, cuts it off, and strives for both minds. In this way, one seeks vipashyana through the door of hearing and holding, and with that going before, one cultivates calm abiding.
