It is diligence and faith. Benefit is extreme habituation, because it benefits both body and mind. Approaching is mindfulness and awareness, entering into one-pointedness of mind by not forgetting the object, and if one is not careful about this, it will be completely cut off. The antidote is attention and equanimity, because it manifests the mind completely holding and completely abiding, thereby completely abandoning sinking and excitement, and there is no proximate affliction, because it follows the signs of abiding and so on. As it is said, in the Madhyāntavibhāga: Not forgetting the object and, Sinking and excitement, Knowing that one can abandon them, Tranquility is abiding. Thus it is said. The second is gathering, which is languishing through sleep and drowsiness. Its basis is the lack of insight, because it becomes sinking through laziness. Having abandoned it, cultivate in accordance with non-languishing, which is to see the knowable with the wisdom of individual self-awareness. Distraction is scattering to external objects by following the lovely signs, its basis is the lack of impure thought, because it is excited and cannot truly hold. Having abandoned it, in accordance with non-distraction, it is to individually self-aware of hair and other things as impure. What is in accordance with the basis of both is the light thought. Depending on these, my intention will not become too languid, nor is it too grasping, this is abandoning the two bases. It is not gathering inward, nor is it scattering outward, this is abandoning gathering and scattering. The thought of the latter and the former, this is in accordance with non-languishing. The idea of above and below, this is in accordance with non-distraction. Thus, the mind that is distinguished is not entangled, therefore one should cultivate the mind with luminosity. My mind should not become a dark aspect, thus it is said, this is proclaiming cultivation in accordance with the basis of both. The result is that the person who wants to realize the Dharma, wants eyes and supernatural powers, etc., who focuses his mind on this, how to focus on his own Dharma in the sky.

For beings and so on, they will become fortunate ones who manifest as they wish. Why are the three, such as mindfulness, not established as having the truths as their objects? They are included in the path of accumulation, and only make the mind-stream suitable as a vessel for realizing the truths as they are, but they are not actually engaged in realizing the truths as they are. Therefore, they are not focused on the truths. The faculties and powers are actually engaged for the sake of realizing the truths as they are. Therefore, they are established as focusing on the four noble truths. Therefore, the objects of the faculties are the four noble truths, because they are included in the application of realizing the truths as they are, and therefore they are their aspects. The nature and companions are easy to understand. Meditation is: with the faculty of faith, in the manner of believing in the truths as things to be known and abandoned, etc.; with diligence, in the manner of delight, for the sake of realizing the suchness of the truths; with mindfulness, in the manner of not forgetting, focusing on the truths, etc.; with concentration, in the manner of one-pointedness of mind on them; and with wisdom, meditating in the manner of thoroughly distinguishing impermanence, etc. Therefore, these five are called faculties because they have power over realizing the truths as they are. Although there are faith and so on in the stages of mindfulness and so on, they are only faculties that have power over the general aspects of liberation, but they are not faculties that have power over realizing the truths as they are. Therefore, as long as one has not engaged in accordance with the part of ascertainment, the five, such as faith, do not have the term "faculties of the aspects of enlightenment." The result is that they quickly generate the path of seeing, and these are placed in the stages of warmth and peak, so they are immediately relied upon, and endurance and the supreme mundane dharma are relied upon later, so they are accomplished. The objects of the powers and so on are the same as the faculties, that is, those faculties themselves are incompatible with disbelief and so on in the stages of endurance and the supreme mundane dharma.
