Because in that case, all sentient beings would converge into a single continuum. The lineage of the noble path is merely a thinning of obscurations. It is also unreasonable to say that the initial noble path lacks causal conditions. For it is stated that the naturally abiding lineage is the distinction of the six sense bases. Moreover, all schools acknowledge that all minds and mental factors arise from four conditions. As it appears in the *Distinguishing the Provisional and the Definitive*, the very thinning of obscurations demonstrates the presence of the seed of the uncontaminated. They say that this view is always effective. In response, the *Meaning-Hidden Exposition* strives to prove that the abiding of habituation by its very nature is reasonable. However, I realize that their examination of whether habituation abides by its very nature or is newly produced is actually an examination of something that does not exist. If the so-called "habituation" were a substantially established entity, like the "attainment" asserted by the Vaibhashikas and others, then it would be appropriate to examine whether it has existed from the beginning or is newly produced by a cause. Otherwise, it would not be reasonable to establish it as a substantially established entity. Here, it is not asserted that habituation is substantially established. Rather, here, the term "habituation" is merely a designation for the very capacity to generate all defiled phenomena. Just as that capacity cannot be determined to be either the same as or different from the alaya, it also cannot be designated as either abiding by its very nature from the beginning or being newly produced by conditions. However, it is only reasonable to examine whether the alaya itself has possessed capacity from the beginning or whether capacity is newly produced by conditions. Upon such examination, it is reasonable to say that this alaya-consciousness has possessed the capacity to generate all defiled phenomena from the very beginning. What does it mean to say that it has existed in that way from the beginning? It means that it arises from its own cause with a nature capable of being the cause of all defiled phenomena. It does not mean that it exists in that way from the beginning without any fabrication, like the *pradhana* of the Samkhyas. Why does it arise in that way from its own cause?

If this arises as a cause in the nature of being incapable of being the cause of some of the defiled dharmas, then, at that time, even if this encounters conditions, it cannot be the cause of those dharmas, because it is the nature of this not to produce those dharmas, because it arises in that way from its own cause. The nature of things cannot be changed by conditions, because the dharma-nature of dharmas cannot be disturbed by anyone. If this, even if it cannot be the cause of some of the defiled dharmas, therefore, this possesses the seeds of all dharmas, this is not reasonable. In that case, the alaya-consciousness abides by its very nature as capable of producing all defiled dharmas, this is established. In that case, this does not depend on the function of the door, because it arises as capable by its very nature, it would become that the function of the door does not produce capability, in that case, it would become not the function of the door, because no difference has been made at all, if you say so, this fault does not exist, for example, if the dry barley seed does not arise from its own cause as the nature of being able to produce sprouts, then, at that time, even if it encounters conditions such as water and fertilizer, it will not become capable of producing sprouts, just like charcoal. Therefore, although the seed abides from the beginning as capable of producing sprouts, just as conditions such as water and fertilizer make the ability to produce sprouts powerful, the alaya-consciousness itself, although it has the ability to produce fruit from the beginning, because the function of the door makes the ability to produce that fruit have excellent power and arise. In that case, the afflictions such as attachment and, the virtuous dharmas such as faith, cause the alaya-consciousness to abide from the beginning as capable of producing desirable and undesirable fruits, that itself again causes the ability to produce those fruits to have excellent power and arise, those imprint good or bad habitual tendencies on the alaya, thus establishing names. Just considering these, the habitual tendencies abide by their very nature, the imprinting of the function of the door
