Then, just like the ālaya-vijñāna, even though the latent impressions are pure, they are still non-obstructing and indeterminate, and it will only become that way. If that is the case, it is unreasonable for good and non-good dharmas, etc., to arise from non-obstructing and indeterminate seeds, so saying that they are not one is unreasonable. Because it is not contradictory for various good and non-good dharmas to arise from non-obstructing and indeterminate latent impressions, the scriptures have already explained this with the analogy of "the juice of words." In this way, both the view that substance is one and the view that it is different are unreasonable because they are harmed by reasoning, while the characteristic can be examined for its difference through reasoning, so it is only different. Do the latent impressions that exist in the ālaya-vijñāna exist separately like the folds of a mushroom? Or do they exist as one taste like water and milk mixed together? What will happen from that? If it is like the first case, then there is the fault of saying that the ālaya-vijñāna and the latent impressions are different. If it is like the second case, then it is also unreasonable for them to produce various different fruits separately. If you say that, then you should answer like this: Are you arguing based on considering the substance? Or are you arguing based on considering the characteristic? If it is like the first case, then the various latent impressions neither exist as different substances, nor are they mixed into one, because they have not been established as substances. If it is like the second case, then these cannot be established as the same characteristic, because if the cause that produces these is established by the same cause, and the fruit of maturation, etc., also produces only one, then if the latent impressions established by non-virtues such as desire and virtues such as faith are one, then their maturation will also produce only one, so the actions of accepting and rejecting good and evil will become meaningless. Therefore, the latent impressions established by good and non-good must be different characteristics, because the cause that produces the effect is established by different causes, and the fruit of maturation also produces different results of wanting and not wanting. Therefore, because various fruits such as good and non-good, wanting and not wanting, etc., can be observed, it can be inferred that there are many seeds of different characteristics in the ālaya-vijñāna that produce these fruits.

Since these various things cannot arise without a cause, and the very power from which these things arise is termed "habitual tendencies." As it is said in the Pramāṇavārttika: "Because various fruits are seen, it is inferred that actions have different powers." Just as it is said. Now, are the habitual tendencies established by virtuous and non-virtuous actions also abiding in the nature of virtue or non-virtue? To this, some Tibetan teachers say that the habitual tendencies of virtue and non-virtue are virtuous and non-virtuous because they produce pleasant and unpleasant ripenings in sequence, and because they are subsequently related to virtue and non-virtue. That is not reasonable, because it is contradicted by scripture and reason. Among them, for the moment, the reasoning is as follows: Whatever habitual tendency is established by virtue is not virtuous, because it does not act as an antidote to non-virtue, like the afflicted mind. Whatever habitual tendency is established by non-virtue is also not non-virtuous, because it does not act as a helper in generating virtue, like the resultant consciousness. These reasons are not unestablished. Like this, whatever exists simultaneously in the same continuum with something cannot be said to be contradictory to or an antidote to that thing, like the resultant consciousness and the afflicted mind. The habitual tendencies of virtue and non-virtue also exist simultaneously in the same continuum with virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas, which negates the pervasion of contradiction. It is also not uncertain, like this, whatever is not the opposite of a virtuous dharma cannot be definitively determined to be a non-virtuous dharma, and whatever is not the opposite of a non-virtuous dharma cannot be definitively determined to be a virtuous dharma, like unspecified dharmas. The habitual tendencies established by non-virtue and virtue are also not, in sequence, the opposite of virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas, which negates the pervading factor of the pervasion. Therefore, virtue and non-virtue...
