The first part is further divided into a general explanation of the three dharmas and a specific determination to dispel what is difficult to understand. The first part has twelve topics: the distinctions of the nature of the aggregates, elements, and sense-bases; the reason for the fixed number; the presentation as contaminated appropriation; the definitions of the three dharmas; their individual establishments; the order; the name and meaning; the example; the excellent distinctions of aspects; the summary; the association; and the possession. The first part has two sections. The question is: If a treatise is composed with the aggregates, elements, and sense-bases as the object of expression, then how many aggregates are there? Similarly, how many elements and sense-bases are there? Here, if even the names of the aggregates, elements, and sense-bases have not been mentioned in the treatise, how can one suddenly ask about the distinctions of their numbers? There is no application of the qualities of distinction without a basis of distinction. Answer: It is true, but nevertheless, it is a common practice among scholars to explain the object of expression, purpose, etc., as a branch of entering the beginning of explaining the body of the treatise. Here also, when the explainers explain the purpose of the treatise, they assume that the object of expression of the treatise is the aggregates, elements, and sense-bases, and then raise the question, so there is no fault. Even so, it is necessary to establish a connection when explaining, otherwise it will become disconnected. Answer: It is sufficient to have a connection when explaining. If another connection must be established at the beginning of composing the body of the treatise, then there will be no end, and it will be too extreme to require every treatise to have a beginning like the sutras. The second is the answer, divided into three. First, the number of aggregates. The basis of distinction is the aggregates. The word \"are\" is to distinguish it from the following two (elements and sense-bases), that is, in the context of showing the fixed number of the three dharmas, only the number of aggregates is fixed at five, not the elements and sense-bases. The word \"are\" should also be applied to the following two in the same way." } ] ============================================================

The number of divisions is five, as it is said. The nature of the divisions is from the aggregates of form, to the aggregates of consciousness. Among these, because it can be destroyed and demolished, it is form. Whatever has this characteristic, all are piled together by consciousness, or precisely because they carry the burden of universal afflictions, or because it is the characteristic of extreme increase of suffering, therefore it is its aggregate. Because of experiencing, it is feeling. Because of holding the appearance of gathering and knowing, it is perception. Because the mind manifestly constructs, it is formation. Because of distinguishing objects individually, it is consciousness. Whatever has this characteristic, all are piled together by consciousness, therefore it is its aggregate. Why is it both form and aggregate, so it is called the aggregate of form? The aggregate related to form is called the aggregate of form. If according to the first saying, the form on which the aggregate depends and the basis should not be the same. If according to the second saying, the form on which the aggregate depends has no other meaning, so the words of relationship should not be connected. If you say so, both sayings are possible, there is nothing inappropriate. If the meaning of aggregate is carrying the burden of universal afflictions and extreme increase of suffering, then it conforms to the first saying. If the meaning of aggregate is piling up, then it becomes the latter saying. Secondly, the number of realms, the basis of division is the realms. The number of divisions is eighteen. The nature of the divisions is from the eye realm to the mind consciousness realm. Among these, because it holds from the perspective of holding the past and present near uses of form, or because it is the cause of the manifestation of the eye, it is the eye realm. Such near use holds from the perspective of the object, or because it is the cause of the accomplishment of form, it is the form realm. Because it holds the self-nature of holding the near use of holding form, or because it is the cause of its manifestation and accomplishment, it is the eye consciousness realm. Like this, the rest should also be appropriately combined, it is easy to understand. Here, if taking holding the near use as the meaning of realm, then it is both eye and eye realm, so eye realm etc. are the same basic combination. If taking the word realm as the meaning of cause, then the realm related to the eye is the eye realm.
