Moreover, this is also the basis of self, because when consciousness names things that are seen and heard, etc., the illusion arises that the one who names is the self. In order to reveal the basis of this illusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of consciousness is taught. When it is recognized that naming things that are seen and heard, etc., is consciousness, then that self-grasping disappears, because the nature of consciousness and self are not compatible. The aggregate of formations, such as the mind that clearly engages the mind in virtuous and non-virtuous dharmas, is also the basis of self, because when they incite the mind to generate virtuous dharmas such as faith, and non-virtuous dharmas such as attachment, and cause it to clearly engage, the illusion arises that the agent of virtuous and non-virtuous actions is the self. In order to reveal the basis of this illusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of formations is taught. When it is recognized that the mind, etc., are the formations that cause the mind to clearly engage in virtuous and non-virtuous objects, then that self-grasping disappears, because the nature of the mind, etc., and the self are not compatible. Suppose, even if it is admitted that what is seen and heard, etc., and naming, etc., are the aggregates of form, etc., and not the self, but if there is doubt as to what it is that the sense faculties such as the eye rely on to enjoy objects, and that consciousness relies on to name things, etc., and that the basis on which they rely is the self, then, in order to stabilize those places that are the basis of self that were previously explained, the aggregate of consciousness is taught. Moreover, the one who experiences objects such as form through the doors of the sense faculties such as the eye, and the one who names things that are seen and heard, etc., through the door of consciousness, when it is recognized that it is consciousness, etc., then that self-grasping disappears. Because the nature of consciousness, etc., and the self are not compatible. If it is thought that self-grasping is limited to only the five characteristics mentioned above, then in order to eliminate these, it seems that the basis of illusion can only be determined to be the five aggregates, but the view of self is not limited to this, as it is said in the *Madhyamakavatara*: "The self conceived by the tirthikas is an eater, permanent, real, non-agent, Endowed with qualities, and inactive." And in the *Madhyamaka-tattvasamgraha*, the Vaisheshikas:

"It is the support and the enterer and the eater." Thus. The Secret One says, "Earth and fire, water, and so on, that knowing constant entering is the nature of that possessor." Thus. The Edge of Intellect says, "Consciousness is powerful, indestructible, likewise life also dwells here in the self. In the sky there is no difference, likewise the self is also certain." Thus. The Practitioner says, "Other self, the self is changing, with the nature of following, it is considered to be the essence of mind." Thus. The Victorious One says, "Like the measure of the victorious one, the victorious one considers the nature of the person, the mind, with substance and category." As it is said. Thus, the outsiders have many different characteristics of the self, and there are also many ways of grasping the self that are in accordance with it. And also from the scriptures, it is said, "There are twenty extremes of the view of the aggregates." If one asks, is there a fault in this? There is no fault in this. Like this, all the different views of self that exist are definitely considered to be of the nature of a material self and of the nature of consciousness. Among them, all those who consider the self to be material arise from the fact that they consider the senses such as the eye to be the basis of delusion in enjoying objects, so all of them will be contrary to the explanation of the form aggregate. All those who consider the self to be consciousness do so because they see that the respective bases such as feeling enjoy the ripening of virtue and non-virtue, and do the actions previously described, and therefore they have such a view. Therefore, all of them will be averted by the explanation of the aggregate of name and base. Moreover, the teacher Sthiramati also said, "Those such as the Samkhyas who consider the self to be consciousness view the name aggregate as the self and the form aggregate as the self's. Those such as the Vaisheshikas who consider the self to be material view the form aggregate as the self and the other four as the self's." There is no harm even if it is said that there are twenty extremes of the view of the aggregates. Because, these twenty views will be explained here as five views of self and fifteen views of self's. Moreover, the five views of self are also those whose object is the five aggregates. Thus, by explaining the five aggregates, the five views of self of the twenty extremes of the view of the aggregates will be averted, and by the disappearance of those views, the views of self's
