Connect with words related to "etc." Third, the basis for classifying the number of ayatanas (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་) is the ayatanas (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་), etc. The number of categories is twelve. The nature of the divisions is the eye-ayatana (མིག་གི་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་) and, up to the dharma-ayatana (ཆོས་ཀྱི་སྐྱེ་མཆེད་). The future eye-consciousness, as a gateway to birth through the place of residence, or as a cause for the manifestation of eye-consciousness, is therefore the eye-ayatana. Similarly, as a gateway to birth through the object of immediate use, or as a cause for the accomplishment of the manifestation of form, it is therefore the form-ayatana. Likewise, the rest should also be appropriately combined. Here, too, the manner of combining words should be understood as before. Here, the classification of the three dharmas (ཆོས་གསུམ་) is mentioned before their definitions because they do not have a common definition that can be applied subsequently, so it is not possible to state the definition without classification. Therefore, mentioning the classification first is necessary for easily understanding the definitions of the three dharmas. Second, regarding the reasons for the fixed number, there are three. First, the question regarding the fixed number of skandhas is: What is the need and reason why the number of skandhas (ཕུང་པོ་) is fixed at only five, when it can be summarized into two skandhas, form and formless, and if expanded, it can be divided into many? The answer is: In general, the Tathagata taught the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas to those to be tamed as antidotes to clinging to oneness, cause, and enjoyer, in that order. As stated in the commentary: Why are the skandhas, etc., taught? It is to counteract the three types of clinging, in order. The three types of clinging are clinging to oneness, clinging to the enjoyer, and clinging to the agent. Clinging to oneness, the preceding self-clinging, cannot be removed in the way of removing external thorns, etc., but if the faults of the inner mind are removed, it is removed by refuting the object grasped by that mind. Because the entry of that clinging mind is not allowed in the absence of any real or fabricated object. As stated in the Pramāṇavārttika: When removing qualities, faults, and subsequent, desire, hatred, etc.

Therefore, since these are not seen in the object, it is not because of external appearances. As it is said, if the object is not refuted, it is not possible to abandon it. As it is said. Therefore, it is necessary to negate the grasping of the object as self by way of negating the self of the object. When negating the self, one might think, just as one mistakes fish scales for silver and a patterned rope for a snake, all the illusions that arise in the world arise from seeing truth and falsehood as similar dharmas. No one has ever seen an illusion arising without a basis. If there is no self, then on what basis does the view of self arise? To answer this, it is necessary to point out the basis for the illusion of self, and that is none other than the five aggregates, such as form. As it is said: "Whatever śrāmaṇa or brāhmaṇa regards as self or belonging to self, it is only in these five aggregates of appropriation." Therefore, in order to reverse the grasping of self, the five aggregates are shown as the basis for the illusion of self. Among these, the body, along with being completely grasped, is the basis of self. When the body, along with the five senses such as the eye, completely grasps the five objects such as form, and enjoys them, attachment to the self as the seer and the hearer arises. In order to explain and clarify the basis of this illusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of form is shown. When it is known that seeing form and hearing sound, etc., are merely the five senses entering into the object, then such self-grasping is reversed, because the senses such as the eye are not of the same nature as the self. Through this, when enjoying the fruits of virtue and non-virtue, the enjoyment is feeling pleasure, pain, and neutrality, and these are also the basis of self, because when they enjoy the ripening of virtue and non-virtue, the illusion of a self that experiences the ripening arises. In order to show the basis of this illusion of self-grasping, the aggregate of feeling is spoken of. When it is known that the one who experiences the ripening of virtue and non-virtue is feeling pleasure, pain, and neutrality, then such self-grasping is reversed, because feeling pleasure, etc., are not of the same nature as the self. This makes designations, so designation is perception.
