Now, let us discuss how to instill habitual tendencies. In this context, the act of instilling and the base being instilled, through arising and ceasing together in one continuum, leave the capacity to produce results similar to themselves in the base being instilled, even after the instiller itself has ceased. This is the meaning of instilling habitual tendencies. For example, when sesame seeds and flowers are placed together, even if the flowers wither, one can observe the sesame seeds emitting the fragrance of the flowers. Therefore, it is evident that the flowers leave the capacity to produce such a fragrance in the sesame seeds. Regarding the manner of instilling habitual tendencies, there are three views held by earlier teachers, as follows: Some teachers say that habitual tendencies do not depend on the instiller, but exist inherently in the ālaya-consciousness from the beginning. The instillers merely nourish it and enhance its capacity. Others say that habitual tendencies are entirely newly produced and do not exist inherently, because in sesame seeds and other things, one can see the newly instilled fragrance of flowers and other things, but one does not see an inherently existing fragrance. Still others say that some habitual tendencies are inherently existing tendencies that need to be fully nourished, while others are newly produced by the instiller. Among these, the produced habitual tendencies are the dominant condition for the inherently existing habitual tendencies, and both are the co-operative cause of the results. This is what they think. Regarding the first view, some people argue as follows: If desire and other instillers merely nourish the inherently existing habitual tendencies and do not produce new ones, then they will not become the co-operative cause of the ālaya-consciousness. If that is the case, it contradicts what is said in the *Compendium of the Great Vehicle* (Mahāyānasaṃgraha), which states: "Just as the ālaya-consciousness is the cause of all defiled dharmas, so too are all defiled dharmas established as the co-operative condition of the ālaya-consciousness." This is what they say. But this is not the case, because nourishing similar habitual tendencies is the co-operative cause, while nourishing dissimilar habitual tendencies is the dominant condition.

If it is said that the nature of Dharma is not seen to exist in smell, this is not correct. For example, garlic and stones do not retain smell even when they come into contact with flowers, so they do not have the ability for Dharma to retain smell. But sesame is known to have smell existing as its Dharma nature. Otherwise, even if it comes into contact with flowers, it would ultimately never retain smell like garlic and so on. This is how they would respond. Regarding the second point of view, they would also argue as follows: If habitual tendencies (Skt. vāsanā) do not exist by their very nature but are newly produced, then the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness) should also newly produce habitual tendencies after coming into contact with another ālaya. Moreover, the noble path (ārya-mārga) is also not experienced in the stages below the path of application (prayoga-mārga), so there is no need for new habitual tendencies. Therefore, the ālaya-vijñāna and the first noble path would become causeless. If habitual tendencies exist by their very nature, then there is no fault because the ālaya and the first noble path arise from the seed of the ālaya that exists by its very nature and from the seed of the uncontaminated (anāsrava). Those who accept that habitual tendencies are newly produced would say that there is no fault because the mind consciousness (mano-vijñāna) that focuses on the internal sense bases also focuses on the ālaya, and therefore the ālaya arises from the habitual tendencies it has allocated. Moreover, the lineage of the noble path is not uncontaminated; rather, it refers to the bodhisattva lineage in whose continuum the seeds of the two obscurations (āvaraṇa) can be abandoned. Those who can only abandon the obscuration of afflictions (kleśa-āvaraṇa) are the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. Those who cannot abandon the seeds of both obscurations are those without lineage. For the first noble path, there is no causal condition. The statement that minds and mental factors arise from four conditions refers to existence, but it is not definitive. Therefore, there is no fault as stated above. This is how they would respond. To this, others say that it is unreasonable to think that the consciousness existing in the ālaya produces its habitual tendencies. If that were the case, then the consciousness that focuses on the minds and mental factors of others would also produce their habitual tendencies in oneself. If that were the case, then the minds and mental factors of others would arise in oneself.
